Oil slightly overfilled - is it a problem?

I was unaware about the requirement to warm the engine before checking the oil until today - hence this post.

A couple of days ago, my (cold) engine was on or around the minimum mark on the dipstick. I then proceeded to add around 1/2 a litre of oil, which brought the level up to the maximum mark (still in the cold engine).
Now having just discovered that perhaps the reason for the original low reading is the car's dry sump, I've got slightly panicked that I've overfilled the engine, albeit slightly.

I dont have the car with me at the moment to get a warm reading, but will check later.

Still, sitting here at work and worried I've overfilled.. Obviously I know its potentially a big problem if overfilling by a significant amount, but in my case, its perhaps 1/2 a litre or so.
Should I be worrying, or should I just let it (hopefully) burn off over time?

I wouldn't worry about it, it's not a huge amount and the level will only go down through time.

Youll be fine, only 1/2 a litre wont make much of a difference at all. The 'warm' reading is more likely to make sure you dont underfill, as some of the oil will be likely still finding its way from the head through the oil filter.

As above, you will be ok. You know when you've overfilled it when oil comes out the dipstick hole! :o

Just don't spill it on those alloys! you know what I'm talking about AL!

I actually knew of a woman who filled the oil to just below the filler cap................ :!: My mother-in-law tried topping up the oil through the dipstick filler. :?

not as silly as it sounds, my old brabus smart car didn't have a sump plug so all the oil in and out had to be sucked or poured down the dip stick hole. Think there are others that also don't have an oil filler out there too.

Thanks for the feedback.
Panic over.
I checked the dipstick again. Firstly when cold (out of curiousity) and it had dropped back down to half-way between the empty and full points.
I then fully warmed the car up, and took another reading - this time it was right on the Full level..
So fortunately, I hadnt overfilled - but lesson learned!
Z4 = DRY SUMP = Check oil ONLY when fully warm.

There's always exceptions, but this was an old Fiesta!
