Oil Service Parts from BMW - Prices and Grade of Oil

Hey everyone, I know this issue has been discussed to death on this forum, I've been through numerous previous posts as I am trying to understand what Oil to use (if I attempt my own service). I came to the conclusion that I want to use Castrol Edge, and also came to the conclusion that it would be either 0W30 or 5W30.

I just called BMW Farnborough to find out prices of all service parts and I thought that the following may be of interest to others:

-Firstly, the prices of their parts
-Secondly, the fact that they recommend and use Castrol Edge 0W30

All prices include VAT:
Oil Filter 12-53
Air FiIter 26-45
Micro/Pollen Filter 36-96
Spark Plugs 68-40
7 Litres of Castrol Edge 0W30 139-00

The Oil is an absolute rip off, you can get 8 Litres of the same Oil for about 70 pounds! So is the Pollen Filter, I think I recently bought and installed a Bosch one for about 8 pounds. Not sure on the other parts, haven't priced them yet...

So I guess from this that I will be using 0W30!
 
0w30 is very thin I believe and it's recommended to use a slightly thicker oil if your engine has higher mileage.

My undy uses Mobil 1 5w30 on mine and I use castrol magnetec 5w30 for top up's.

Oil service from him is £119. Support the smaller businesses.
 
Thanks for the info Ben. Yeah I'm still torn between 0W30 and 5W30, and I would use an Indy if I could find a recommended (honest) one near my area! :-)

Yes, the oil from the dealer in 1l bottles is an absolute rip off! It sounds like you've found the Castrol Edge sold in 4 l bottles at much better prices online.

I was also recommended 0W 30 by the dealer, and told 5w 30 would also be fine. I went 0W 30 in the end, as mileage is fairly low and I'm hoping it will be easier to get round the engine on cold starts and avoid the HVA issues, but you could argue 5W 30 would be less likely to drain from the cylinder head. I honestly don't know either way! It's not a huge difference.

I've changed the oil and filter on the N52 and found it straightforward after some reading online. What engine do you have? I'd be more than happy to give more details if interested.

I found a good how to by one of the other members on the forum, it used to contain pics too but no longer does.

I have a 2003 2.5i and any advice would be welcome! 8)
 
In case anyone else is looking, I purchased 4L of Castrol Edge 5W30 from Costco for 30 Pounds.....really good price.

I've also purchased my Bosch Air and Oil Filter so I'm all ready to go....wish me luck! :driving:
 
Have a look around for GM's Dexos 2 5w30 Oil. You know its good oil as it has approvals accross the board from VW 505.01 and BMW LL04. Its fantastic and cheap. You used to be able to get about 4 x 5L (Enough for 3 services) cans from a dealer for £75! Or you can get them off ebay for lesser quantities.

The rest of your stuff get from CarPartsForLess.co.uk - Its rebranded EuroCarpParts but always about 30-40% cheaper.
 
Halfords own brand LL04 has been in my car for 10k miles+ (two oil changes) and is just fine.

Even better if you can get a borrow of a Halfords trade card - I've just had 1x5ltr, 1x2ltr and an oil filter/sump washer for £49 at the weekend.
