my car is due for a oil service so i thought i would phone around.

BMW Grosvernor specialist in Reading £166 ish
Munich Motors specialist in reading £170 or £90 +vat if i surplied oil etc.(So £115 for half an hour :o )
BMW Coopers of Reading Main Dealer £171

Blimey o riley iam considering doing it my self, oil service kit from opieoils £75 but a little woried about the stamp in the book its always had main Dealer or specialist.
What do you guys think?

Also popped in to Halfords for a price for oil about £80 for 8 Lts
Also noticed there where selling 5w30 fully synthetic for vauxhall cars 5 Lts £10 yes £10 :o . Iam probably sure in my ten year old car it would be fine to ., not that i would though.

My Z is nearly 10 years old so I just buy the oil myself and get my local mechanic to change it for £40 - £50

Stamps are important, but for a 10 year old car I don't worry about dealer, even indie work for such a small job

I keep thinking the same johnny

Even both the inspections are money for nothing

When the work that is actually carried out is relatively simple and doesn't take that long it's hard to justify the cost just for the stamp

Have you got a national tyres near you? They charged me £45 for full oil and filter change using fully synthetic Castrol edge. Dealer quoted £139!!

Did they use a tyre leaver to remove the sump plug tho?

In all serious though I don't really trust anybody to put what oil they say they are going to or have put in

I would have no qualms using an indy to due oil change & just ask for a receipt as future record or stamp your book
Most buyers when the car reaches a certain age just want some proof of maintenance being done .
I don't care about free coffee & muffins i certainly wouldn't pay more than £120 for oil & filter from any garage

They've done my car twice and its been fine, all correctly invoiced etc. I can't see a national company would take part in fraud and con people with cheap oils!

I did query the low price and they out it down to wanting to be competitive and buying in huge bulk. Quote for a 3.0 Z4 below:

Asda 5-30 fully synthetic....suitable for extended service intervals and suitable for Mercedes, Audi and BMW .....£20.00 for 5 litres .....its in my Z4

I always buy OEM filters though

wow i might try them , for just a oil change i carnt see thay can go to wrong as long as there put the correct oil in . Which can be easily checked .Did there try and do the sale patter on you though " your tyres are low or you need new breaks etc?

Your v welcome mate, I was tipped off on my mini forum and like to spread the word to stop people getting ripped off!

They didnt try sell me anything else but tbh tyres etc all good anyway!

I also took a empty litre top up bottle with me which they filled up for £4 rather than the £15 they normally cost! :D

Oh and google first for discount codes as seem to remember they were doing 10% off oil changes recently!

Asda sell Castrol Edge for £35 for 4L so £70 for 8L, or their own fully synth 5w-30 for £20 (as a comparison to the prices you gave)
Also noticed earlier today Home Bargains by me has Castrol Edge 1L for £6.99 atm so £55.92 for 8L

Haha you beat me with the Asda price, I opened up browser this morning and just added comment so missed the new ones in between :P

I serviced mine myself in September.Got the oil filter from BMW ,the oil from Costco and it took minutes.Took longer to get the car up in the air ,on stands and the wheels off, than changing the oil.The filter is really easy to get at,right at the top of the engine, you take the top off and change the cartridge,no dripping or anything.Used a washing up bowl to catch the old oil ( sorry Mrs bigshurv :D ) and then poured it in the empty container once the new oil was in the car then took it to the local tip.Mine is 9 years old and I don't think service stamps mean anything as long as you keep the receipts for parts. I also changed the belts at the same time and was really easy.Removed the wheels, checked the brakes, and used the opportunity to clean the wheels really well and also did my drain holes, and also the front and rear anti roll bar bushes. It also gave me the opportunity to have a really good look under the car for corrosion etc. I spend about 4 hours on it in total, taking my time and enjoying tinkering on my Z.I rekon I did a far more thorough job than any dealer would've done.

Had the oil service done this morning and no problems exscept there didn't know how to reset the service light and had to remind them to stamp the book . So had to show them how to reset the service light but all in all £57 well spent
