Oil self service

Can any of you fine folk let me know which tool/socket size etc etc I need for the oil plug for draining the oil during an oil and filter change. I have the tool for the filter holder inbound just not sure about the bottom drain plug. Other filters done without any issues.

Think it’s 17 or 19mm, been a while since I had my 3.0si now though. Just take a selection with you & you’re covered :thumbsup:

Mine's an e89, is it a traditional bolt I can get at with a socket set of is it a hex type thingy??

The si had an n52 engine like your e89 does, think it’s a normal bolt head.

Don't forget the copper washer that comes with the oil filter, a few times i replaced the plug not realising there was a new copper washer with the new filter.
 
Thanks for the heads up, I did notice it and the new rubber seals in the filter box. First time doing them all. I understand it's a crush washer, is that right.

I usually smear the large oil filter o-ring with oil to stop it from binding as its tightened. The sump bolt copper washer is for sealing, there should be a torque setting for it somewhere.

So the copper washer is for the sump under the engine??
I think I read it was 25 Nm somewhere for both filter housing and sump.

Yes, the copper washer is for the drain bolt under the sump.

I have been doing 10k oil changes, but have now started doing 5-6k oil changes.
Something i noticed what a difference an oil change does, even though it's Mobil one, i don't think will be pushing for 10k changes in the future.

Would you use Mobil over Castrol? Is one better than the other?
 
Not had any problems with Mobil 1, that's all i can say.
I think fresh oil seems to make the engine a bit quieter and smoother.
So i thought i would now change it more often at 5k miles.
If i left it to the car computer to advise, it would probably tell me oil change at 18K.

Castrol is OEM just make sure it meets BMW long life spec, I believe its LL004 or similar.
Check on opie olis website, also generally the cheapest supplier and you will receive regular discount vouchers after you buy.
They do complete service kits for your car as well.

I was lucky with Opie got 2x5litres for £72 delivered.
Also keep an eye at Halfords, i dropped lucky there once.
