Oil Light Randomness

Hi all,

I am getting the oil light appear when I turn the car off intermittently...(undoubtedly spelt wrong). I have checked and the levels are spot on - any ideas?

Cheers,
Neil

Is it the orange oil warning? If it is the senso,r in the sump also measures the viscosity of the oil. Try changing the oil and filter, mine had
the same niggle but that cured it!

Mine also does this.

Are you checking the oil after the engine has been running? (i.e. warm?) mine has been doing it on and off for the past year. However last week I filled it so that it was at the top of the dip stick region. This seems to have cured it, I guess my sensor was very sensitive!

Thanks for your replies - oil and filter changed when I got it about 2 months ago so they should be fine. It is at the halfway point between on the dip stick.

I think it must tbe the sensor, it does it in car parks when I park having gone up the ramps and also on my drive way (steep incline). I'll monitor - as long as no one said "your car sounds like it's about to expire" I am happy.

do you mean half way between the min and max mark?

if so sounds like a top up would solve as that is what mine does. probably needs about a litre

When mine came on a couple of days ago in exactly the same way you describe, pressing the 'check oil level' button on the dash caused the display to say +1.0l - I did as I was told, problem solved.

dr nick he has a 3.0 with a dipstick not the on dash version like yours

it will almost certainly be the thermal oil level sensor in the sump that is faulty unless of course the wiring has been damaged (unlikely)

if your doing it yourself it's worth changing the oil and filter (see the guide in the how to section) at the same time, as you will need to drain the sump completely to remove it. it's simply three 10mm nuts and a plug. clean the area where the seal presses against the sump and fit the new one with a light smear of fresh oil on it's seal,

then fill with fresh oil (or if your not changing it with the oil you drained out of the car)

hope this helps
