Oil Filter not seated correctly

Had my car booked in to dealer for engine noise that sounded like a drive belt.

When I took to dealer to book in, a technician had a quick listen and said it sounded as if it was coming from the oil filter housing.

Anyway dealer has looked at the car and has reported that the oil filter wasnt seated correctly and has relplaced the filter which has rectified the problem.

As I had the car from new 4 months ago and the problem wasnt really apparent until I had a blocked hydraulic tappet around 2 months ago, I am wondering if the BMW technician that came out to look at the car a couple of months ago removed the filter to check it.

My main concern is that the oil hanst been filtered correctly for the last two months, and what damage will have been done to the engine. On the plus side the car has only done 4,000 so hopefully the oil is still clean.

Should I pass my concerns to the dealer or BMW?

no leakage aroun dhousing, I did point out that oil consumption seemed higher recently, but the dealer reported no sign of leaks etc

srhutch, if it wasn't showing any signs of leaking, then it must have been doing it's job OK. At least you have a record of it at the dealer, so that any future problems should be resolved under warranty with no quibbles, not that I would expect any.

my concern is that if the filter isn't seated correctly then there could be a gap at the top or bottom allowing oil to bypass the actual filter, this would not result in an oil leak as the oil is still fully contained in the housing.
