Oil filter housing gasket leaking

Hi guys,

My oil filter housing gasket has a bad leak (2005 BMW Z4 2.5i Automatic).
Do you guys know how many liters of engine oil do I need to buy (along with the gasket, which is fairly cheap) while getting this done? I am planning to buy the BMW TwinPower Turbo 5W-30 Engine Oil. Would you recommend something better than this? Also, while doing this gasket replacement, would you recommend something else to be changed/replaced as well (because whole lot of stuff needs to taken apart to get to the oil filter gasket to be replaced).

Did my ofh gasket as well as the cam cover gasket to stop the zed decanting its' oil once and for all.
Replaced the waterpump, stat and coolant at the same time to solve a standing overheating issue too.
Be careful with the bolt tightening on the ofh gasket. Potential to crack the alumiunium casting if overtightened.
I used a smear of aircraft gasketmaker on the corners of the cam gasket too. hasn't shed a drop since....touch wood.

I take it you are going to change the oil filter.use a Mann oil filter and Castrol Edge 5-30 .

I’m sure it is, but make sure that oil is LL04 spec.

It won't need much oil at all if you're only replacing the gasket. All the oil will be in the sump.

6.5L oil.

I have already replaced the valve cover gasket. Is cam cover gasket same as valve cover gasket? :?
I did replace the water pump (original bmw), thermostat (mahle behr), all the pulleys, tensioners and the belts (original bmw). Did this last month (didn't change the hoses and the expansion tank though; it is in fairly good state right now). But I didn't quite think about getting the oil filter housing gasket replaced at that time? My bad.

If you're not doing a full change why not buy 4L and have some aside incase you need a little extra at any time?

Can I go for 10W-30 instead of 5W-30. I see that 10w-30 is good if it's not winter climate.

I personally wouldn’t go up to 10W but I guess that depends on where you’re based? Here in the UK you want something lower to handle the colder temperatures.

Also you’ve pictured only a small bottle? Again I wouldn’t personally mix and match different oils. But then it’s all down to you, i.e. if you’ve got some lying around then you can use but I wouldn’t make a point of mixing different brands and specs.

5w30 will be fine, and while you’re at it maybe just do the oil and filter change too? Instead of just topping up?

Yes, from what i remember i only put about 200ml's in after replacing the gasket.

Stick to the 5w 30 spec unless the engine is worn etc and burning oil.

I replaced the OFH gasket myself. Plenty of good videos to follow on YouTube. I replaced the drive belt pulley and tensioner and pulley. Given you have to remove both to replace the OFH check them for wear and replace. I bought OEM made in Europe parts which were of a high standard. Good luck.

I don't have the tools to do the job; else would have given a try.
