Oil filler cap left off!

Garage left oil filler cap off. Done ca 100 miles before the yellow emissions light came on. Found the cap and now replaced it...warning light still on and running a bit lumpy. COuld thi shave casued any damage or could the two be unrelated?
 
Should be fine mate, had mine off for longer when similar happened. I never had the emissions light but it should disappear after several car restarts as the ECU regards everything as back to normal.
 
Yup, as Ed says you should be fine. did you loose much oil? the garage should be topping you up for free!

I did this once in my old car. oil covered the inside of the bonnet and the engine block then started burning off wile i was sat at some traffic lights.

Absolutely crapped myself seeing all this black smoke come from under the bonnet.

Never done it since!

My old Ka ( yes ) started to burn a lot of oil for the last 12 months I had it - used to top it up every other time I filled, was always spilling it over the engine. Used to smell and smoke nice for a couple of journeys every time.
 
Once drove from Cambridge to Cardiff without the oiler filler cap in my last coupe...a Capri, just a steam clean required, long before the days of ECU's.
 
Dealer did that on one of my M5s, but my run home was via the motorway, and the first thing I knew was a plume of oil behind me at I hit 70-ish.

Stopped at the side of the road and saw there was no filler cap on.

Phoned the dealer who claimed that the inspection I'd just had was carried out by a 'trainee', but had been supervised and signed-off by a master technician.

Asked them who supervised the supervisor, and told them to get the master technician out to the hard shoulder of the M62 with a gallon of oil, an oil filler cap and a steam cleaner, as the expensive oil I'd just had put in during the inspection (with valve clearances done by a trainee monkey) was now all over the M62.

Never did get the steam clean they promised, despite going back there a few times before I saw sense.

Thankfully the M54 and other modern engines have a panel between the cams and cap to stop this, thank goodness! :thumbsup:
 
Thanks all. Car now running as smooth as before and warning light cancelled. No oil mess at all. Brain now plugged back in!
