65000 miles. Change oil every year. Do about 6k miles and never top up.

Bought mine two years ago with 64K on the clock, now has 80K and i've never even had to top it up. It has been serviced twice in that time though.

Nothing wrong with mine at this consumption, or Phil's (his is almost identical) and Andy is sub 1k per l...all still on 0W30. I followed Phil for about 75miles at various speeds and acceleration rates...his exhaust emits just like ours does...and I've followed ours closely during a couple of thorough workouts. Glazed cylinders...we're all around 40-50k miles of (probably) gentle use before us 8)
You know my grumblings about TWS...too thick and not enough thought has gone into chucking it willy-nilly into our lumps due to BMW's laziness. My background (and esp her indoors' background) says don't do it...there are potential repercussions that could get costly. Just use a bit and be happy
Perry has just switched his back from TWS to 0W30 as he didn't like the idea of it in his lump. Only Mark is happy..... 
He trusteth Sytner too much 
I get more than 1000miles per litre (0W30). Probably near 1,500 I think.. To be honest I haven't really worked it out properly.

... and in the power of warranty :wink: Actually, mines been running fine for nearly 2 years on 10w60, so more than happy with it. May switch to a less thick mix when I (eventually) get the head gasket replaced, but for the moment happy to bimble along.
On a (slightly related) note - anyone use Slick50 in theirs?
It's still cheaper to run than a Porsche, where you have to replace the main seals every few miles!
Annoyingly the N46 engine has a dumbed down electronic oil level system. You can't really tell what the precise level is. I think it another case of 'progress' being a step backwards. How hard would it be to have a dipstick?
Yup agreed, especially as looking at the oil on the dipstick is a good indication of it's true state.
A mate of mine at work had a Peugeot with a 'smart' oil level and it went wrong and kept telling him to fill up with oil, end result was a trashed engine.
Maybe on the 2.0L BMW fugured it would be bought by girls who wouldn't want to get oil under their fingernails... :roll:
A 'dipstick' is not so dumb after all.

It's true about the running in process. The cylinder walls have small bumps and imperfections when new. Yes you shouldn't run high revs when new, but you need compression and load to push the piston rings to get rid of imperfections and mate the piston rings to the cylinder walls. It's not bad to put in some old engine oil when new and run it under high loads, but lower revs for the first 1000 km and then change the oil for fresh synthetic. Cars like that use less oil. For those scared to run the car hard when new, your car has already seen 100 mph on the rollers in the factory
