Oil consumption

For information only. I bought my 35iS in December 2016 at 21.5k miles. It's now done 42.5k and used 2 litres of oil. So, obviously, about 1 litre per 10k miles.

When I bought my 23i on 125k it had one owner , he said the last 50k he had topped oil up half a litre every 2500/3k ( 5w 30)
I had it serviced soon as purchased & changed oil to Millers 5w 40
Sold it 3k later with no drop in oil level

We have never had to top up the oil in our 23i in the 5 years we have had it.
Its now past 50,000 miles and it has had whatever oil the BMW garage and BMW indy garage has put in it.

For a car that rarely does journeys over 100 miles, spends a good percentage its time between 4 & 7 on the rev counter and is the family shopping trolley, the consumption seems OK.

Sounds similar to mine, 5w30 going in at a similar rate but only on 75k miles. Might have to give the fabled Millers a go when she has a oil change in a few months :thumbsup:

Hey Busterboo, as a conscientious consumer, if I may be so bold as to call you that, as opposed to.........oh I don’t know......pluck something out of the air......hypocritical pedantic racist card throwing dipstick.....off the top of my head for some bizarre reason...heaven only knows where that came from.... :scratchhead: anyway, as said consumer, I was reading your extremely interesting oil consumption post.....actually I did at one point hit my head on my porridge bowl for some reason but that certainly woke me up I can tell you....Anyhoo, I digress, it got me thinking about fuel, petrol to be precise, did I read another of your fascinating posts about how you only put 95 Ron in your BMW motor company E89 S drive 35is motorcar because that’s what the handbook for said vehicle says you must put in it? Very conscientious of you sir, I like a man that sticks to the book, and did I also read you defending your descision to the last when others pointed out it’s fine, nay, beneficial to put fuel injector cleaning 98 or 99 Ron in BMW motor company vehicles because that’s what the handbook says?

Well, I was just also wondering about tyres too, I notice you have said that, by your own freewill, you have put non run flats on your E89 35is, very commendable in my humble opinion, as I know how much difference they make to the ride and handling of said motor vehicle, but I wondered why you have done so as I also notice that in the handbook for the vehicle, which you very sensibly clearly stick to the guidelines, as demonstrated by your strict use of the correct fuel as outlined in the handbook, after all, what would be the point of a big motor vehicle company such as BMW to write said handbook based on probably millions of pounds worth of testing and research into tyres just for a customer to then come along and completely ignore the book? That would be foolish would it not?

But he changed them on both axles, and as anyone that knows anything knows, that turns a negative into a positive! :wink:

In my first year of ownership of my 23i I didn't need to top up, then after an oil change (done at BMW dealership) always seemed to need top up, then had another oil change (again BMW dealership) and so far no more top ups? I think the electronic dipstick is a nightmare, if I park the wrong way on the drive it starts warning me that there's no oil and stick a 1 litre in, get in on the flat and turn it off and restart and its fine and back to normal
 
Added half a litre while still in running in period. Since then the oil level has remained at its full mark even at yr 2 when service is needed.

One of the few things that does work.
 
Mine usually needs a top up of a litre between annual oil changes. Most turbo cars burn oil so it figures more turbos more oil.

Yours sounds about right to me.
 
Despite me not liking it, the 'orange oil can + bong = add one litre (in next 125 miles)' worked well yesterday and the green bar was 'Full' this morning.
