Oil change

It always amazes me that people in the street think they know more about the oil an M engine needs more than the engine designer working with an oil manufacturer. The manual is clear - Castrol TWS or the Castrol Edge marked for M engines. There are also labels in the engine compartment. Any other oil isn't approved, period. The engine isn't cheap to maintain, repair or replace. Its a motor sport engine after all - why penny pinch on oil?

BMW also advise against any use of any oil additives.

I agree with not pinching pennies on oil (or on coolant). In the grand scheme of things, they're actually pretty cheap--especially versus an engine!

I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Gives a nice smell on overrun after an enthusiatic run. :driving: Does this invalidate my warranty?

:evil:

What got me going on these expensive 'super oils' - and something that has never been answered by my oil supplier - is how, when:
  • proper, fully synthetic oil from esters (not cracked hydrocarbon synthetics, which aren't really fully synthetic but are marketed as such);
  • that don't use any crude oil to manufacturer;
  • that they've always been expensive as they're made in (relatively) small batches;

The price of these 'synthetic' oil rise at the same rate as normal oil when the market price of oil goes up. I know it's purely the oil companies making more profit while using the crude oil price excuse, but they're forgetting that they've specifically said that the proper synthetics that they're producing don't require any crude oil.

My oil supplier just said he didn't know and just passed on the price rises from his distributor - although I only ever order when there's a special offer on (i.e. bogof, buy 2 get 1 free, 25% extra free, etc.) - plus he's still cheaper than anyone else I can find.

could it be due to the plants that make those synthetic oils use petroleum products to run?

It's the same plant that produces the normal oils so there'd be a smaller overhead (due to working on a much smaller scale) on the synthetic line due to power price increases.

The ratio of proper synthetics from esters to all the other engine oils is about 1L ester to 100,000L mineral/dino/organic.
