Oil Change Intervals

Hey guys. I searched for this in the previous postings but couldn't find it, so don't kill me if a thread on this already exists. I am a few thousand miles from my 15,000 mile oil change, and am starting to wonder if I should wait for the Service Interval Indicator to tell me it needs to be done. I'm accustomed to the 3,000, even 5,000 mile oil change intervals with my other vehicles, but 15,000 seems a bit much. I've read a fist-full of mixed opinions, but no one seems to have a definitive answer. So there it is; is it best to get the oil changed at 15,000 like the computer's telling me or is it best to stick with a more traditional service interval?

I think everyone will have their own opinion on this one but the way I see it is this. Oil starts to deteriorate from the minute you first use it. Just because it's possible to squeeze 15k between services doesn't mean it's a good idea. By the time the service interval comes up it's completely shot. If someone wants to wait till the oils completely choked up with carbon etc and lost most of it's lubricating qualities before changing it then fine but I prefer to make sure it's always a bit fresher. I generaly change mine every 5-7k, sometimes even more regularily if I've been doing track days or I have one coming up soon.

I have my oil changed every 5 to 6,000 miles on my other cars. I bought my 06 Z4 CPO with less than 11,000 miles and had the oil changed at 12,000 at no charge. My dealer said to bring in the car anytime before the oil service is due and they'll change the oil free of charge.

Mine is sitting at about 5000 miles left to go. I'm probably going to bring it in soon to get em to change it. I may even ask em to look the car over too.

This was a topic on a MINI forum also!

I tend to trust BMW knew what they were talking about when they designed the engine! Then again, I am lazy!! :P

change your oil more often, i use amsoil 5w30 with excellent results. change it yourself and it will cost you under 50.00 for oil and filter, cheapest insurance there is if you want to keep your car a long time, and put 300000k on your engine, trust me and change below 7000k and all the fluids on the car, radiator, brake, transmission, not power steering unless you have 'M' and differential, yes even that, and your basically scott free of trouble, so often we neglect these vital fluids that are lifetime, B.S. change it and be happy.
