Oil black as the night...

Gearbox oil, to be exact.

Just collected the Z4 from it's first big service overhaul, had it in to remove any chance that there was any service history missing

- Brake Fluid
- Gearbox Oil
- Diff Oil
- Spark Plugs
- Fan Belt
- Handbrake shoes clean and adjusted (actually holds even when not pulled right to the heavens now!)
- Lubricated steering rack top seal
- All round Visual Inspection and Diagnostics

Had it done at 'ProTech' in Aylesbury, Jason is the guy who owns it - ex Head BMW Tech, knows his stuff, really impressed by his turnaround considering how busy he was and just a really genuine guy. Went through everything with me, told me what he'd be using, gave me a courtesy car. Thought it was worth mentioning an independent who you can trust

Anyway, Jason said he'd never seen gearbox oil as black as that which came outta my ol' girl. Just goes to show about the whole 'sealed for life' gubbins! That's on a 3.0si at 78,000 miles, so if you're anywhere near that and haven't had it changed yet, might be worth having a look in to!
Gearbox now feels so much more sure of itself.
Diff Oil looked fine apparently, though that's to be expected really, but it did quieten down a whistle which I'd noticed at around 30mph.
The visual inspection came back clean bar the brake discs which are pretty much at the end of their life (Will run the pads til they need changing then swap them both out, 4000 miles or so), which I'll treat myself to just before Christmas I think :D

Nothing else exciting to report, just wanted to give everyone a heads up about the gearbox oil change who may not have done so yet!

Good work mate, will deffo have mine looked at when its in for its service, which is not for another 9k though. My girl as just turned 85k so i dare say they will be worthwhile extras.

Cheers, tug.

Hi Schemauk, I will taking my car into ProTech as I want to have a few things done on it, I read somewhere else on here about how good they are, did they have it for long.

Got 3.8k to go before an oil service in my 3.0si coupe -- will get the gearbox & diff oil looked at then.

Agree with the above, horrible when mine came out - well worth doing. The intervals are way too long imho, after what I saw come out on schedule I'm running oil 5-7.5k, brake fluid every year, box and diff oil 30k.

i did all the same youve done appart from lube the steering rack. but i did rad fluid too

tbh 60k on clock and gear box oil was clear, is yers a manual?

the gears certainly started to feel slicker, but tbh this could just be as wether was getting better, will find out this winter lol

I changed my manual gear box oil for Redline Synthetic MTL 75w-80 GL4 just this morning. My Coupe has done just shy of 50k miles, but the oil that came out was jet black!

I must say, there is a noticeable difference in shifting now, especially going 1st to 2nd, which always felt a bit notchy/un-smooth before.

Dropped it off at 08:30, picked it up at 13:00 mate, and that included him having to special order the fan belt in that day. Must say I was thoroughly impressed 8)

I agree! Will definitely be having my gearbox changed every 30k, the diff oil maybe slightly longer (as I don't track my car or anything, so doesn't get much of a work out!)

Yours must have had an easier life than mine earlier on then haha! It is a manual indeed, and judging by similar comments it seems you must be one of the lucky ones!

50k miles and jet black :silence: scary considering how they say you needn't change it/look at it til double that!

Glad you're finding an improvement, I most definitely have. Notchiness between 1st and 2nd has been reduced, and it finds home in all the other gears now with utmost precision and sure-footedness :D

yer going by pics id seen from others I was expecting it to

mine will get changed every 3 years same with diff and rad fluid, but mileage wise i only do 5k a year

Jason's a top guy. I've recommended him on here before.
My cars going in next week for an oil service, discs and pads all round and a gearbox oil change.

I even take our Volvo XC90 to him as I trust him. And I've worked at a few garages in the past.
