Odd light on malfunction!

04 2.2 manual z4 this came up on my screen MALFUNCTION cog with an exclamation mark any ideas

Sounds like the gearbox switch but that’s only on an auto?

Just checked the owners manual. That symbol should only be used in Automatic or SMG cars?
