Odd accelerator problem

Just found a problem with the accelerator .the problem is ignition off, push the peddle to the floor until it stops ,then another gentle push click and peddle goes down another 1/2 an inch .put this in a driving situation traveling along at say 40mph in 5 gear of the auto box ,do the same foot to the floor past the click and every time the box drops to second and revs like hell .any help will be much appreciated .the only way to describe the click is like pressing the home button on an iPhone .

You've just discovered kick down. The whole point is to get the car to immediately give you maximum acceleration in the lowest possible gear.

Ok thanks so at 70 mph the box will only go in to the optimal gear and not over rev .

Correct. On an auto I've never had it over Rev as it's designed to ensure it only shifts to the correct gears without causing catastophic damage.

Once you've tried it you'll wonder what took you so long

I take it this is your first automatic? As pretty much all auto's for decades have had kick down. Nothing to worry about, just think of it as all the way down it goes, push it further and it goes more!

Yes first auto, came from the s2000 9k all the way .it just takes time I still want to stick shift

I use the paddles on the DCT when driving for fun. When driving normally I just let the box do its thing. The odd time I've had to use kick down its been in a moment of 'oh s**t, get me out of here', which she does nicely.

It's only a problem if it cracks through the floor and you can see the tarmac!

It certainly won't do anything it is not happy with :)

I used to drive autos quickly all the time in the police and you learn over time to pre empt kick down making overall progress quicker - it does depend on the car, your knowledge of how it works and the conditions obviously. This, coupled with a bit of manual over ride via the paddles makes for quick and easy progress ... and still very much fun compared to a manual IMO.

Hmmmm I'm the opposite, felt too detached for me for real driving pleasure, whilst BMWs autos are very good these days they take something away from the car :|

Try it on the Autobahn at 90mph - use kick down and the box shuffles down to the lowest cog possible. - keep the foot buried and at into the 100 + it changes up again and again at the right time - you wouldn't do that in a manual, or would you?

Auto every time for me, how many times are they in the wrong gear?

Auto boxes enhance the car, they take nothing away!

But your not doing it Ronk the car is which is my point, when I tried the Auto I felt like a spare part :? The only real plus I can see is in stop start traffic. With BMW offering GPS auto boxes you may as well stay at home and let the car drive itself lol.

Motorways and A roads pah, give me twisty B roads and a good old fashioned manual box and I'm a happy bunny. Where do you do 120? lol.

I'm not dismissing Auto boxes and they have their place just depends what floats your boat and your interpretation of enjoyment :)

Autobahn - for a month in the summer time, plus the odd trip in the autumn or spring.

On return it makes me realise what a waste our cars are in the UK!
