ODB fault code reader

Depends what you are after, but one I have among my tools and always with me is torque, running on android with a elm 327 BT adapter. All for under a tenner. Identified EML o2 sensor and able to reset etc..

Anyone recommend a "proper" more feature rich diagnosis / reset tool for our Z's?

As I said, depends what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

Inpa, sss or the newer ista p/d can be bought for around £30 if you have a window laptop. You can do everything with that.

Is it the D-CAN with or without the adapter that i need mate ?

Go with the silver cable.

Apologies to the OP for a slight hi-jack, but I've been meaning to get something to read OBDs using a laptop for a while and what srhutch has described looks just the job!

We have a few BMWs in the family now - I've got E86 and E46, Mrs Tidy has an R56 Mini and my sister has an R53 Mini. Will the silver cable work for all of those?

Just to mention that to get the full error codes from all the modules, the M model can be a bit of a bitch.

Whilst I could get some codes using Torque / ELM, then a few more with INPA and a D-CAN cable, it took ISTA and some cable mods to get the full listing. This was needed to read the DSC unit error codes.

Not had this problem with a non-M or E90s etc.
