OBD tool code reset procedure

 Mostly Holland. Sometimes UK.
I used my basic OBD tool to reset some fault codes recently.
However, I'm not entirely sure I have addressed all the issues that I had fault codes for.
Question: does an OBD scanner, even a BMW code-specific one re-scan for faults on re-starting engine on / scan procedure?
Or do you have to drive a few miles for the OBD to scan for faults properly?
 
I was always under the impression that that the fault codes were read from the memory - I'm sure the garage jobs can tell a date the sensor posted the fault
If correct you shouldn't have to drive anywhere IMO

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along shortly
