Number Plate Fixings

Well my personal plates arrived today and just took at a look at the car and they are double sided stickers holding them on.

Like these I would guess .... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/24-x-weatherproof-number-plate-double-sided-sticky-pad-Registration-plate-fixing-/171189466642?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27dbaff612

Any tips on getting them off - I was thinking a bit of cotton or something to lift them - is that the best idea.

I have a while yet as the although the scirocco v5 document has arrived, I am still waiting for the document to transfer the plate from retention to my new car

My old plates were stuck on with these type stickers - you just pull the plates off - I was worried in case paint came off as well but it didn't - the tape just sits on the lacquer - if any of the sticky gets left behind you can get it off with white spirit . I used new sticky pads to fix the rear plates but screws ( with caps ) on the front because the plate holder bends around the bumper and sticky pads will just spring off at the ends in time.

Bend the plate!

Sit the plate on a brick or block of wood, weight the ends of the plate and use a hot air blower / fan heater around the centre. When its cooled, it has a permanent set so you can use the tape to stick it on without the corners lifting.

Good tip, I will remember that one

Depending on the length of your reg no, you can also legally shorten the front plate to get rid of the excess white.
There is then less tendency for the plate to lift at the extremities.
It still needs the heat bending treatment though.
I quite like the effect that it achieves

If they're the black double sided pads that dealers often use then they take quite a bit of effort to clean off - the best stuff I've used is Autoglym Tar Remover, other solvents don't do a lot.

Your right is does look good but its worth remembering that the BS number etc should remain visible. If the MOT examiner or the cops want to get picky they could!

That's why I kept the ends of the plate ;)
Had no problems with MoT at the supplying dealership.
The plate has conforming fonts, spacing and borders. It is unfortunate that standard placement if the BSAU mark precludes inclusion

I have had my front numberplate on and off atleast 3 times this year! For MOT's and change of plates etc.

My tips... Always use a hairdryer to heat the glue... Makes it a million times easier.

Wd40 is great removing the sticky leftover... But remove all foam first.

Clean and wax the paintwork prior to sticking the plate back on will protect the paint... The pads will still adhere.

And heat the plate and pads when sticking the plate back on.

I dont have a plate holder on the front... Sticks just fine to the bumper, even though its pretty curved... I use 3 strips per plate, one vertical each end, about 10mm from the end, and one horizontal in the center.

Mine is stuck on with tape. I got the short plate off ebay and it has all the legal markings. I've been told that it is legal to use shorter plates for 5 digit (13") and 6 digit (16"). Also asked the local traffic police and they say it's ok too. I just need to get the holes filled in and painted where the original long plates had been screwed on.I didn't heat the plate before fitting and never have had to even with long plates.

I would like to shorten my plate ( 5digit ) but I have GB plates and don't like the sticky backed GB plates.

BS No isn't a testable item, was testable, for a short period about 3 years ago. Can't be failed for that item so cutting it off shouldn't be a problem.
