Non-OEM Wind Deflector

After sitting in a friend's SLK today (nice cars!) with the top down avec wind deflector it made me realise I need one.

Has anyone got any experience of this one?

A bit of a long shot I know.... looks easier to fit than the OEM honeycomb one and is cheap even including shipping to UK.

Question is does it perform as good as OEM? The roll bar centres are uncovered so I wonder if that will be a factor.

Any opinions welcome!

Yeah there are a few people here who have built deflectors that look way better than that.

Don't forget roadster solutions if you don't mind spending a little bit.

Ugh!! That looks awful! Get the proper BMW one with the removable centre piece. It really is quite easy to install once you get past removing the existing hoop covers. And even that isnt too difficult to do.

I have the OEM one and I have taken it off for winter (much better rear visability without it). I have put the roof down a few times this last week and I don't actually think it makes much difference at all. My dad has a Saab with the huge wind deflector over the rear seats and that is an amazing difference, but on our cars I am not convinced.

I actually thought the clear screen looked better than OEM but looks like i'm the only one! I don't want something on my car everyone else finds so offensive so i'll steer clear.

sp3ctre - thanks for that, which deflector do you have, is it the fabric one that covers the roll bars or the solid one that fits in to brackets?

I think many people would agree that the clear looks best, it's the hideous velcro straps that look...well... errrr...s**t! LOL

I have the OEM one that clips in, not the one that covers the roll bars.

Enought said about the velcro - horrid.

Clear looks way better than the mesh, however the mesh is a much better way to reduce draught. Mesh slows the air but allows it to pass through, while the clear will cause turbulence as the air rolls over it. Well documented in the Z4 development book

All down to preference, but I have the OEM mesh as it can be removed and clipped into the boot lid

Ah I can appreciate the strap hate! Found one that does clear straps for info for anyone in my boat:

Calling it the 'Best Z4 Windblocker' is a bit presumptuous!

If you want something as awful as both of those examples why not go to Homebase buy a sheet of perspex then stop off at a fabric shop and buy some velcro, it will be cheaper and still look as naff.

Got to agree with Sp3ctre, I personally don't find it makes much difference whether the Wind deflector is fitted or not.

This one looks good, works well and is easier to install the the OEM item:

Much better than the 1st and 2nd. But I still prefer OEM mesh or honeycomb.

RichardG - which one have you got?

Strange how some find benefits and some don't.

I really like the look of the roadstersolutions one, I think I discounted it though for some reason so I'll go back and read the posts on that one...

i have an oem one but it looks like the perspex was changed in it - needs to be changed again i think, but i find it screws up rear visibility - paired to the auto dim rear view mirror it makes it hard to tell if you have a policeman tailing you unless you check your side mirrors alot!

I have to agree. I didn't put mine on at all last summer.
I had the clip-in one too and I never noticed a big difference, but one thing is that the OEM one still covers the gaps in the roll bars, which does make a bit of difference. That's the best compromise for me, cover the roll bars with the OEM perspex bits and leave the rest.

Wow... I'm shocked people say it makes no difference, I took mine off yesterday and even my passenger commented.. her hair was blowing all over the shop.. lol

i think it makes a considerable difference.. so i rarely take mine out.
