Non M-Sport vs M-Sport

Be interested to hear from anyone who has had both and how they compare them for the ride quality/toys etc.

Reason for asking, just read a review and this was part of it: Against- The firmer suspension fitted to this M Sport model ruins the Z4’s otherwise supple ride and adds nothing to the handling. Worse still, it ups the price.

I see that solid black is also a free option on the Roadster! Strange that they don't do the same for the M-sport.

Not sure what you mean by comparing the "roadster" with "m-sport".

All E89's are Roadster's.

M-sport simply denotes the trim level you get - i.e. different bumpers, lowered suspension, badges, thicker steering wheel etc.

IMO, there is nothing wrong with M-sport suspension - yes it's a hard ride but it's not that bad and it lowers the body over the wheels which looks a lot better in my view.

The only way to tell if you like it is to try a Z4 with and without M-sport and see what you like.

My bad, took it straight from the BMW site, they just list them as BMW Z4 sDrive20i Roadster and BMW Z4 sDrive20i Roadster M Sport.

Just looking back at the pictures I took of the car we had for a test drive, it was a non M-Sport version, the only complaint if you can call it that was the steering wheel could have been thicker...I'll have to look in the book to see exactly what you do and don't get with each model. A non M-Sport version with auto box comes in cheaper than a manual M-Sport. Been looking on the net and if you go for the black you can't see the kit anyway!

Just wondering how people find the ride comfort who have had both.

Well, I think this is a matter of personal preference. I tried both before buying, didn't like the M-Sport suspension, found it made the ride too hard although definitely sharpened up the cornering. Also I liked the M Sport 'look' so one option was to find an M Sport car that had the 'delete M Sport suspension' option selected, which kept the cosmetics.

In the end I bought a non-M sport car.

I've owned both M Sport and non M Sport. The M Sport suspension is not too hard and I actually prefer the ride. Plus the M Sport looks a lot better in my opinion.

Absolutely spot on in all details.

I've owned both as well.

You could even spec a car with adaptive suspension if you wanted. M Sport Trim is always a more desirable car in the 2nd hand market and the price between M Sport and non M Sport can vary quite a little bit. However the E89 Z4 looks equally as good in non M Sport trim. The difference in price could be a few more extras so it's all a personal preference.

I have to say that with my adaptive suspension I find the car in sport setting helps when going over cobbles. Makes it a much firmer ride and I don't get shoogled about.

The 35is I'm looking at will have had adaptive suspension as standard, it does not however have the M Sport bumper. No problem for me as I prefer the standard bumper really, though both look good.

My question is; does the 35is have "Sport" suspension- I know it's lower by I think 20mm, which is bad news on the roads around here, but is it overly stiff as well, even in normal mode, compared to the adaptive setup available for the other engine choices?

Firstly the 35is DOES have the M Sport bumper the car isn't called M Sport but it is a M Sport. If you've seen one second hand without the M bumper then it's been changed.

As you know the suspension is adaptive and it means in normal it's not harsh, sport it firms up but again is not overly harsh and sport plus, well really fot a track.

Indeed I think I'll ask him

Edit: hmm something's weird; he says nothing has been changed but even the steering wheel isn't the M sport model, which comes as standard on the 35is I'm pretty sure.

Is he trying to foist a 35i on me :stir: I've asked for more pictures, awaiting a reply...
