Some of you may remember a couple of months ago I had an issue where at least one of the hydraulic tappets failed to fill with oil after only 4 days of not using the car. Even after driving 1 mile the car still sounded like a tank.
Anyway BMW assist came out and the technician said it was normal (not to me it isnt) and got the oil to circulate. Now I wasn’t there and can only assume he idled or throttled the car to get the oil to circulate.
The following day, I had the same problem although it did get quieter a lot quicker. But as I was not happy, and BMW assist wouldn’t really help as the car was driveable, I got my local dealer to collect.
They had it for 3 days so they could start first thing in the morning, but found nothing.
The one thing I had noticed before all of this and something the BMW assist technician noticed was that there is a belt drive type noise coming from the engine although the dealer also didn’t seem concerned. This has got worse recently, so I popped into my dealer on the way home on Friday.
A technician came out and had a look, got me to turn the A/C on and off and then bought out another technician. The first one suggested that the Oil Filter Housing was the cause of the problem, and that they had one like this before.
Now to me this is BS, as the housing is just a lump of metal with an inlet and outlet for oil flow (correct me if I am wrong). I wonder if it’s anything to do with the oil pump, which is possibly near the filter housing, question is, if the oil hasn’t been circulating, how much damage has been done to the engine?
Now I have no doubt the dealer will fix, as they have witnessed the problem, but I concerned about the damage that may have already happened. If the problem yours out to be oil related should I contact the dealer and BMW in writing stating the facts in case I run into any problems at a later date, when the car is out of warranty.
Car was built Aug06 I purchased as a pre registered in May07 with 70 miles on the clock it now has 4,000miles on it.
