Noise when turning?

Hi, when i am driving my Z at a very low speed (crawling in 1st gear) i hear a strange squeaky / straining sound coming from the car when i turn the steering wheel. It's similar to the straining sound you hear from an old ship...

Has anyone any ideas what this could be... the fact that i only hear it when i turn the steering wheel is worrying me a bit, thanks in advance for your help...

Actually, I have the same problem, especially when slowly backing up. Old ship sound is an accurate description. Steering seams normal otherwise.

I get a similar noise particularly on smooth surfaces (multi storey car parks) at slow speed. I put this down to the tyre squeal caused by the varying turning radii between front and rear tyres.

I get a noise on full lock, especialy in reverse, I think it's the tyres scrubbing and nothing to worry about.

Hmm I have a noise when turning but at speed and only when turning to the right, very noticable on large roundabouts, Have checked in and around wheels but can't see anythig obvious. really don't want to have to take it to a garage.

from what part of the car? 1. from the tires? 2. from the front suspension? or 3. from the steering wheel itself?

1. depends on your tire/road surface you will hear a squeak/straining sound
2. if its a straining gear like sound then there's a problem in your rack and pinion
3. its the EPS, if its a servo like sound its normal, if its a knocking sound then its not normal

Hi, the sound is coming from the engine bay / suspension area... it is defo not the tyres so i reckon it might be the suspension

I get that too. Full lock, sounds like the tyre scrubbing the plastic arch liner

i think there is a difference between most of our noises here though... mine honestly sounds like that sound you hear from an old ship that is under strain... defo more of a steel noise strain noise than the sound of wear and tear that you get from rubber or plastic...

To be honest mate i think your completely right! because for some reason my tires all worn out on the inside... Tracking is fine! must be this!

thanks, Joe.

unlikely the suspension since you are going very slow, most likely the rack and pinion and or track ends/tie rods

have it inspected asap

Do you hear it on full lock regardless of whether you are moving or stationary? My power steering pump whines under these circumstances, but only ever at full lock.

Did anyone find out what this was? I just posted about this same issue, just like an old ship strain
