Noise from shocks normal?

Hi all, noob question here, my shocks have been rather noisy ever since I've gotten this car, so I don't know if it's normal or not. Basically every little bump or pothole where the shocks do their job, there is an audible hissing/squelching noise inside the cabin (as the only driver in the family, I don't know if it's as audible outside the car). I don't recall having ever driven another car where the noise was this prominent (if present at all). Can any of you other z4 owners confirm whether it's time to replace the shocks, or whether this is normal? It has 91k kms on the clock and is an '09 23i model.

Thanks!

Sounds like they might be leaking. You'll be able to see oil if so

I would say its sounds normal as my E85 and 135 do this but i can only hear it with the window open.. i would check for leaking shocks if you can hear it inside the car as greg81 mentioned

Do the car a favour and get some Bilstein shocks, my car 09 23i, rears were rubbish at 50k miles. They seem really cheap compared to the Bilsteins.
Mine weren't leaking but the slightest gravel the traction would kick off.

No my friend, hissing and squelching from shocks is not normal (if you're certain this is where it's coming from - and given your description it probably is).

If your car is subject to an annual compliance test (MoT in the UK) it won't pass. Save yourself the heartache and have it fixed now - then enjoy your car. :driving:

Thanks all, I'll mention it to my indie at the next service (in about a month). And yes, I've been looking at bilstein. Was it the b4 you got, flybobbie?

it is definitely leaking and you get the noise under a certain temperature only, this is how I realized mine were leaking

Yes i think the B4, i think the B6 are stiffer sport version, it's been a while since i fitted them.
They are like chalk and cheese quality wise, best investment i made on the car as well as Goodyear non rf tyres.
I think BMW now fit Bilsteins as standard on the new Z4.
