Noise at cold start

Hi
The engine has developed a noise for a few seconds when cold. Its like a very quick rattle.
2.5I 06 facelift with N52B25A engine.
I am not very familiar with these engine's but it does sound like the timing chain type noise.
Otherwise she runs well apart from a little hesitation at low revs.

Probably a little rattle from the drive belt/tensioner. An easy job but if its just at start up I wouldnt worry.

Try a search on the forum for 'HVA rattle' or 'noise' or 'hydraulic valve adjusters' it's not an uncommon problem on the N52. I think people have posted videos as well in the past.

There are differing opinions as to whether it's something to live with or fix (later type head assembly required) and is more common on cars that are infrequently used. Basically oil in the HVA assembly leaks back past the seals and leaves them compressing air instead of oil.

HVA's, but if it is for only a few seconds I would not worry. Persistent tapping then IMO it needs sorting.

As srhutch points out its not necessarily a big problem , infrequent use , infrequent use at full running speed + temp , infrequent oil change , poor oil choice can all factor
If it was my car id have the oil out for some Millers 5w 30 https://www.amazon.co.uk/MILLERS-LONGLIFE-ENGINE-FULLY-SYNTHETIC/dp/B00N4RQ8SY/ref=sr_1_5?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1473620527&sr=8-5&keywords=millers+5w30

& do some decent runs of 50 +miles at decent revs , see how that goes

One thing I'd point out is that I've not heard of any serious failures attributed to the HVA tick. I would expect forums to have record as they're where people tend to be most vocal about issue, more negativity than praise.

Mr Wilks - the oil you recommend in this post, will it be suitable for my Z? 3.0 Si Coupe 2007.

Cheers.
