Newbie questions on brake discs and pads

Hi all

After almost a year of searching, this weekend I picked up my 3.0i SE Roadster and have spent the (rather wet) weekend with a large smile on my face.

However, my new purchase needs new pads and discs all round, so my question is, do I go standards replacements, or are EBC or Black Diamond pad and discs upgrades worth the extra money?!?

Also, if they are, any recommendations for where to get them and what to pay.

Thanks, and I look forward to actioning some of the great advice I've read so far on the forum...

Heya,

Really depends on if you want to keep the car standard.

Where in the country are you based? I am in Berkshire and can recommend an Indy I often use called Autotech. http://findnetone.co.uk/home/mot-centres/others-a-to-l/autotech-bmw-and-mini-specialist_55407.html

I changed disks and pads all round at that Indy, the owner is an Ex BMW technician and has a good reputation locally. He advised that I can source my own disks / pads if I wanted BMW OEM, however in his own words generic disks / pads are much the same (and sometimes even better quality) at half the price.

At the time I had already purchased the front disks + pads from BMW which cost a fortune (around 300 pounds from what I recall). I took his advice and went for generic disks on the back, saving a load of cash.

If I had to do it again, I'd go for generic disks / pads all round. They look the same and seem to have same performance.

I'm sure a few people on here will have a few tips about upgrading disks if that's what you're after :)

I haved used these in the past on my z3 & 325ci & fitted them to my z4 a few months ago.Work well & look great.Recomendeed !

Oops I'm sorry I posted a link to the wrong garage - had the same name (d'oh!)

Here's the correct one http://findnetone.co.uk/home/mot-centres/others-a-to-l/autotech-bmw-and-mini-specialist_55407.html

Thanks k3ab and KERMIT1970.

k3ab, I'm based in Basingstoke and will be on the look out fir a decent Indy soon, so maybe I'll give autotech a call.

My real question I guess is, is the upgrade worth it in terms of performance. Mines a 2005, so pre face lift and I know part of the face lift was bigger brakes - what I'm keen to know is, was this due to a concern/issue on the pre facelift model (so an upgrade on quality rather than size as I dont want to do a big brake change makes sense), or did BMW simply do it so they had another thing to talk about in facelift PR material?!?

Sorry for all the questions, but they need doing now, so I want to make a good choice as they'll last me a long time (weekend car, so not huge mileage expected...)

I changed the standard pads/discs to EBC Redstuff and slotted rotors on my old car. it made a rather noticeable difference.

I will be changing the pads/discs on my Z4 to the same set up when the OEM ones need replacing. (also the EBC pads don't cover your wheels in black dust :headbang: )

Click on your car on the options panel on the left.i just posted the company link the discs & pads are available for most cars & are direct replacment parts.
