Newbie looking at the Z4MR

Hello Everyone,

I'm Tom and new to the forum and new to the Z4. Not new to the brand however, had an E46 330i Sport until recently, now trundling (flying) around in a Saab 9-5 Aero Estate for winter. Massive petrolhead and work in the automotive industry too.

I've Been struggling with what to get next for a while now, I want something fun, 2 seats, drop top, suitable for the odd track day, and for a trip around Europe. It will be my only car, but my commute is small, and I don't see fuel being much worse than my 330i. I've considered TVRs, Boxsters, Elises the lot. Love the idea of the theatre of the TVR, but none of the maintenance costs. Having spoken about it with some car mates I've realised I've missed being behind the wheel of a BMW, so it's looking like it's going to be the Z4. Boxster is a bit too flashy and Elise a little too hardcore. Reading CAR magazine this week they have the Z4 as one of their "Bargain Driver's Cars" this month and described it as "a TVR, built by BMW". Perfect.

Now I should make clear I am aiming to make a purchase at the end of March, giving plenty of time to make sure I purchase the right car. Budget is £15k. I went to look at the nearest one to me at a dealer, was a sorry sight. Brakes very corroded, spider webs across the wheels, battery flat as a pancake, and a dealer not willing to go for a test drive. Nevertheless I had a good look around it and got it started and running. Looks, and interior wise it ticks all my boxes. In the interest of balance, I am driving an Elise and Boxster S tomorrow, mainly to rule them out. Hard to do now seeing as I didn't drive the Z4 today and there isn't another one within an hour from me.

Now, I've got a few usual questions; what do I need to look for? I've read the general bits and bobs across the internet and it seems the main specific things to look at is the front struts I'm told as the weld can crack? The 1200 mile fluid change too. Besides normal used car things what else do I need to be looking for on these cars? I understand a lot suffer from the clutch spring judder when you turn them off, which stops if you have your foot on the clutch, my 330i had this too. Is it just a minor issue?

Also, being a roadster are the prices likely to creep up as we get towards Spring and the Summer? Or is this just a myth?

From your experience on the roadsters, how have the values been going over the last few years, I'm hoping to buy a house in a few years, and would like to think that I'm not going to loose thousands on a Z4. I do about 10k a year, what's the damage likely to be on depreciation? Less than a Boxster S I expect.

My final question, warranty. I've noticed a few have still got extended BMW warranties on them, and a year warranty can be had from BMW for about £1,000. I know my 330i was very reliable and has the same block, only the rocker cover gasket went, and the then the subframe, prompting me to sell it. Is it worth taking out a warranty on one of these?

Been having a little look around the forum, seems like a really great place. Look forward to hopefully becoming an owner soon.

Welcome along - looks like you have covered a lot of basis , 15k should pull a really good Roadster which has had an inspection 2 and is perhaps sub 30k on the clock - why not put a Wanted add in the forum's section.

I would say a spotless service history and low number of owners will help with resale . in terms of re-sale always a difficult one , i think prices have stabilised but with so many things effecting car prices who knows.

Id also try and drive an Alpina Roadster S as the better mpg might sway it if you are doing 10k a year.

I was surprised when I first looked that there are some really nice low mileage examples about for the money. Thanks for the advice there. With regards to the Alpina, whilst i've always lusted over an Alpina, from what I've read the Roadster S is too soft, in a group test against the Z4M they said the brakes were lacking and the pace was fairly down on the Z4M. Besides I've told myself since I was 17 that I would get an M car while I was 21. I've got until July to achieve that goal!

Welcome and good luck with your search. I got my ///M two years ago with only 15k on the clock for £15k. I don't think it's depreciated much in that time - prices are still maintaining as the lower mileage ones become rarer. the roadsters are generally a little cheaper than the coupes. For £15k you should find yourself a fine motor which ticks all your boxes. And the drive in the ///M is epic.

Good luck and enjoy the journey.

The ///M is a great choice, I was looking at Z4 Alpina reviews, I had a company D3BT at the time, after I sold my 911 and came across the EVO review of the Alpina, TVR, Boxster S and Z4MR, until that article I didn't know there was an ///M variant, the more I read the more I wanted the ///M, I have never looked back, apart from having a soft spot for the Coupe' on occasion, for the money you are looking to spend you should get a cracker :driving:

If there's anything of interest then post up the link, lots of helpful advice on here and some great characters

Hi and welcome, I'm a 51 year old who has just got an ///m roadster about a month ago and I wish I had got one years ago now, it's an absolute beast to drive, I didn't quite pay what you want to pay so you should get newer and possibly less mileage, all I can say is drive one and you will be chomping at the bit to own one, did I read right you are sub 21 as the insurance won't be on your side

Welcome to the forum, petrolveins! Good luck with the search - I would recommend a test drive of both the Alpina and ///M; don't discount it by the articles, IMO the Alpina is a better daily driver (it's why I went for one rather than the ///M)

Not quite sub, I am 21. Had my 330i when I was 19. Somehow I seem to get some very good quotes on cars, probably twice as much as you mind. :x
I'll be looking at £1300 or so for a years insurance, much less than I expected bearing in mind that's what I paid when I was 19 on a lowly 330i Sport :P

Don't dismiss the Alpina out of hand. As a DD it might be a better choice for you.

0-60 within 0.1 of a second and if you put it on the autobahn it is actually faster by dint of being de-restricted. The Alpina is significantly easier on fuel and tax too.

I've owned both, and loved them both. They are different animals though and you should try them both before deciding.

Sky insurance give good sums, it's worth asking them. However for your age if you get a quote for £1300 you'll be laughing as that is exceptionally low for the vehicle you're looking at considering your age. At 21 I was lucky to get insured on my 1.6 mx5!

hi and welcome I have a m roadster 06 28000 miles silver grey , they are getting hard to get hold for a mint one I looked for 6 months and then came across the car I own just 3 miles away in the end . I am now looking at a 35is auto my hip is killing me now

Could have sworn I posted today, but it hasn't appeared. Oh well.

So today I test drove the Elise and Boxster S, can rule out the Elise, it is just too hardcore as a daily driver, the tiny cockpit and controls I didn't get on too well with either. The Boxster S though... loved it! Great sound, great performance and wonderful balance. Seemed to gel with the car really quick and was comfortable pushing it harder than the Elise, so much so I took the last roundabout with a nice handful of opposite lock :D , absolute joy. Having enjoyed it so much I searched again for another Z4MR and located one not too far away in Wimbledon, had a chat with the garage on the phone invited me down to test drive, was above my budget but a very tidy 28k, 1 owner example. Had a good look at the car and the documents then asked for the test drive, and was told again that "test drives are only offered as a confirmation of purchase, this is the best Z4 you will find and drives perfectly". While I understood where he was coming from it's pretty annoying not being able to test drive a car. That's twice in as many days I've had that with the Z4s. Lotus guy was excellent, they also had the Boxster in stock, not pushy at all and more than keen to get out and let me try the cars, knowing I wasn't looking to purchase them. Same was true of the TVR dealership. Has anyone got any advice or guidance in gaining a Z4 test drive?

Just a had a look now, looks lovely. It's over an hour away from me, and that's too far really just for the purpose of a test drive :(.
