Newbie - Lanarkshire

Hello Folks,

Picked up a 2013 2.0i S Drive in white at the weekend. Pretty pleased with it however coming from a Range Rover Sport its a bit of a culture shock. In hindsight I should have searched for a higher spec but as I knew nothing of the Z4's I wasnt sure what was standard and what was available. I dont have folding mirrors, heated seats, iDrive etc. All the same its a nice car.

Only gripe is the road noise, WOW ! 25mph onward and you really need to crank up the music. I can imagine a long drive would end up giving me a headache. Ive read about run flats and the noise they generate however at this time of year its either too cold, too dark or too wet to have a close enough look at whats Ive got to ascertain if I do indeed have run flats.

Are these cars generally noisy ? if I do have run flats fitted would changing to non run flats give THAT much of a reduction in road noise ?

Ive previously owned multiple Merc SLK's , MkII Audi TT Convertibles, E Class Convertibles, Astra Twintop, MR2 Roadster and so on so Im definitely no stranger to both folding hard and soft top roadsters, but OMG comparing to these other cars the Z is a million times more noisy, the SLK's were almost silent in comparison. Is it a thing ? or am I being too fussy ?

Also interested in others ICE upgrades. I did read the thread where there is an upgrade to fit an Android unit on the cubby top of the dash and even fit an iDrive knob in the centre console but at £1k thats a bit steep. Any other options out there people have fitted ?

Hello welcome, reference noise it does depend on wheel/tyre combos..19” wheels with run flats are very bad..

What wheels/tyres do you have?

Also the Z4 has little noise insulation in the body so that doesn’t help..

Look forward to seeing you at either/or next year’s breakfast meets and runs..

The Scottish chapter is quite active with a wide range of 1 and 2 day runs...

Thanks Pbondar, I havent had a close look at the tyres as yet, so cant confirm the make - or even the tyre sizes and Im ususally all over this kinda thing- just the time of the year and being busy. I do however know the alloys are 18" - it would be good to meet some fellow owners. I used to be quite active in the MGF\TF scene many many years ago and found the drives and knowledge gained second to none. Then I realised they were the biggest piles of junk ever to grace 4 wheels.

Ill keep an eye out for you... mines white also (the best colour :D )

Welcome to the forum, I don't think my E85 rag top is to bad noise wise. You have an E89, so a hard top.
The law on the forum is to show us your car in the form of photos :)

I don't find my old 2006 E85 too noisy.. I have a new Volvo XC60 which is very quiet yet the Z4 wasn't a shock when I first drove it... very bumpy yes... lol

From what you say I would imagine your car has run flats, getting rid of them will make a big difference with regards to noise, not to mention comfort. Also having driven the Sdrive28i and sdrive18i which basically is the same 2.0 engine as is the 20i I found it much less refined than the earlier 6 cylinder cars like the 23i or 30i.

Welcome to the forum from NZ. Lot’s of reasons to ditch the runflats, they are heavy as well as noisy, you’ll notice the difference in steering as well.
You’ll find lots of info on here, I’m sure you will enjoy Z ownership.

Another welcome to the forum from New Zealand. :driving: Though I will be back home in Cornwall in three weeks time. :D
