Newbie in Herts - Looking for a Z4

Hi Guys,

I'm Mark, been a long time admirer of the site and finally have decided to come and say hello and get my first Z4

Been after one for years but for another reason or another it's just never happened!

But life is too short and all that so now I'm actively looking for one

I'm after a 2.2 or 2.5 (would consider a 3lt if it was the right one) under 90k miles with full service and must have heated seats. Not fussed about the rest but I'm getting older and want the heated seats to warm the hammys up for Sunday football!!

I've been looking at this car on eBay, I've asked the owner a few questions about service history (says it has most but he doesn't do many miles, the last service was a full service). The springs have been changed at the rear along with bushes, both window regulators have been changed as well.

My concern would be the roof, is this normal that it might need a helping hand to go up? Does anyone know this car, does a forum member know of it?

Many Thanks guys (very much looking forward to owning one of these soon!)

Hi neo,

Good that this Zed has had rear springs and window regulators sorted - both common issues.

The roof shouldn't need a helping hand and as it's mentioned, I'd be thinking the motor might be on it's way out - cost at least £500-600 at a friendly independent and £1000+ at dealers to be replaced so careful. . . .

Roof motors getting wet and failing is a common fault (facelift motors are encased in plastic but still have issues - drain holes need to be cleared and checked regularly).

And - I've just checked the manual - it says that you may have to help the operation of the roof only after it has been stored for a long period say through the winter (as the hardtop was being used) and only for the first operations of the roof after a long period being stored down, not every time it is used. I've never had to assist either of my Zed's roof.

There are lots of 2.5s for sale at the moment - you may find one with a replaced motor already done.

Welcome to the Forum

That's brilliant thank you, I did think that the roof might be an issue, I've noticed that the springs and the roof motor seem to be a common issue, I didn't know about the regulators though I will look out for those.

I'm currently driving a 97 BMW 328i sport convertible, the roof on that still goes up and down without a push so I was surprised the Z's have an issue.

Looking forward to being a forum member as well :)

Hi neo,

Yep - best not be landed with a big cost repair just after your purchase - but it's a bit of a lottery with the roof motor to be honest. That's why it's a bonus if they have been renewed.

Some lovely 2.5s about so be patient. Check out the For sale part of the forum.

Thanks guys for the info and the welcome guys

I know the roof motor along with the springs can be an issue

The search continues :)
