Newbie first timer post E85 owner

Finally decided to brave the frightening world of forum posting and stop being a techno dinosaur, hopefully got it right.

I have been lucky enough to now own a Z4 E85 for just over two years.

It was deal struck with the other half , if we get a new house I can get a sports car. Seemed a good deal at the time but as later pointed out to me the increase in mortgage was over 15 times the value of the car!

After looking at Boxster, S2000 , Mx 5 , Caterham and Elise

The choice became easier at 6' 2" and a weight best left not mentioned a elise and caterham were ruled out

MX5 could not take the likely abuse from mates about hairdresser cars

A good Boxster just to far outside my price range and quickly scared off by the many horror stories of IMS failings and major repair bills. Having a looked at a few was still not sold on the looks.

S2000 I found the ride to hard and its a honda

Z4 it had to be!

After looking at several but not arranging a test drive, took the plunge to look at a 04 plate E85 3.0 Se auto with only 31500 miles just over 2 years ago.

They say do not buy the first thing you see /drive - completely ignored that after the first 5 minutes of driving it. More later.

6000 miles later the smile is on my face is still a mile wide every time I drive it.

I have been mainly out local in the Cotswold and very much a fair weather driver. Two memorable drives through the middle of Wales to Llandudno on my own, to meet up with wife and son at the in laws.

I am using man maths to keep the car every time its mentioned by the wife , by very loudly announcing that its a diversification of my pension pot as it will be a future classic. If a Mk1 basic Escort is over £5k, what will this be worth in the future - not sure she believes me!

Until last month all it needed was new brake pads and tyres.

However it could now do with a bit of money to tidy it up, a poor repair on the paint at the rear light cluster, the alloys good do with a refurb, some low life opened a door into it in the shopping car park marking the passenger door, the rear brake light has a small crack and a pheasant decided to play chicken and run out in front of me, but lost badly and smashed into the front bumper leaving several scratches.

All this was planned this year and funds set aside, until the dreaded strained sounds as the roof was put back up, now the roof motor needs replacing. This has to come first so in march that's this years fund spent.

More worrying when investigating the pheasant damage, something not seen because to much impulse to get driving, is that passenger front light is a black insert and the drivers a silver insert, I have not yet had the courage to investigate further. I hope its not hiding any major damage. I did the relevant searches before buying but rushed in after getting the all clear on HPI and write offs.

Hopefully I have got the photo posting right!

I am also very lucky to own a F31 330D M sport, its brilliant but it is just not the same excitement as the Z4!

Sounds like you're enjoying your Zed so it would be worth investing a little in keeping it up to scratch. It looks a nice example and with low miles should last a long while. It is said that the auto is a good match with the 3.0 engine

Lovely 1st post. Car still looks good even with the pheasant race..
Might want to note, every driver see's all the small imperfections in their own car. Unless you point those spots out the average Joe wouldn't notice.

Feel for ya on the top motor. Glad I own a coupe for that very reason.

Pretty sure there is not one owner here that does not have "SOMETHIN" they need or want to get fixed.

Welcome aboard.

Hi and welcome.

Thanks for the pics - nice car. I hope that your future motoring will be pheasantless.

Enjoy :driving:

As others have said, great 1st post.

As for your roof motor, from what I've read/can gather, these are very saveable by simply giving them a clean/service. Unfortunately, I've no idea how that's done or what's involved but others on here may be able to assist/point you in the right direction.

Cosmetic things can sometimes be made to look better with a bit of DIY skills, again, only noticeable to you.

Good luck with the roof motor repair.

Welcome! Great write-up, car and pics!

Those 3rd brake lights are really fragile. Just replaced mine as the edges started to crack. I don't have much hope of the new unit lasting long as well even though I am very careful now when cleaning that area and closing the boot as gently as possible :/

Hello and welcome to the forum, nice to see the effort you put in your first post, including pictures well done you

Someone will have to organise a Bristol meet soon and you can mix with some other like minded souls, hopefully when I'm in Bristol for the weekend :D

Welcome along, nice first post!

If you're a little bit handy, I'd fix the roof motor yourself, just refurbish what's there. No cost other than some motor cleaner and some time.

I did mine, really isn't difficult.

Welcome t the forum, I had my roof motor moved to the boot, so no more sitting in water/crud. There is a Welsh/English meet in April, it will be my first proper forum drive out, so why not sign up.

Great post and a lot of familiar lines in there that made me chuckle!

I'm about to venture into the world of the Z4 after spending the past 7 years pottering around in a TR6. My mid life crisis started 15 years ago and is getting worse. My dilemma is that I've promised to decant the car out of the garage and convert it into a utility room for er indoors. This is on the proviso that I continued the mid life crisis with a slightly more modern car that could sit on the drive! Fat chance of that happening. So now I'm trying to make excuses on how to retain the space? Drop down ironing board in the kitchen sounds a far better option?

I've been researching the forum since June last year and there are some great posts on here with lots of useful information. These sites are worth their weight in gold and can be addictive.

The list of options you quoted must be standard for most 40/50 year old fellas and I came to exactly the same conclusion. My only issue now is whether to go for the Z4MR or Alpina. Future classics without a shadow of doubt but the Alpina will be as rare as hens teeth in a few years and prices are only going to go up (I think?).

Best of luck with the hood. Hopefully get to catch up at one of the meets later in the year.

Thanks all for your replies

Found this forum really good

In order of replies

Yes it's cheddar gorge , brilliant with the roof down , make sure you go early in the morning and go from the top of the hill down. It gets busy by all the tourist stuff, and it's a shame to start with such a tacky start

The other picture is the A5 Bethesda in North Wales , fantastic and definitely quieter on the roads up there.

Drive way widening on the cards. However the black 320 efficient dynamics was a company car that as the company car tax gets became to high so it's now gone. So I decided to take the car allowance and buy my own went into the Dick Lovett Bristol to look at a 320d and he persuaded me to take on the 330d, only another £20 per month on the pcp lease had to be done!

It's good to know that we all hate the little imperfections

I am going to get a pass and see if I can get along to the April meet

Still amazed at how many responses ,this is a really active and useful forum

Sars - you need to find yourself in Bristol on 24 April. I lost my Z4 meeting virginity at last year's. It was a great day out.
