New Z4M Roadster advice please

hi guys - you might remember me a the point of swapping my alpina for a Z4M - well, I went ahead and did it and am now the proud owner of a Imola Red Z4M with champagne extended interior.

This car is a lot different from the Alpina so can I ask :-

1) The clutch seems to really rattle/chatter in first gear when pushing the clutch in sometimes i.e parking or going slow - sounds like the same noise you get when switching off the engine ?

2) I have just noticed that down by the oil filler tube I seem to be missing a cap ? I'm assuming this is the power steering top up point. I guess they forgot to put the cap back on when they serviced it prior to me picking it up.

3) Engine seem to get tappety/rattly between 3k and 3.5k rpm - I assume that this is the vanos and is normal ?

4) Engine idle when warm is about 900rpm is this normal ?

thanks for all your help :)

Here goes in order of questions.

1. Normal, this is the input shaft and will not get any worse over the life of the car.

2. No idea, I will check mine in light.

3. Normal, nothing to worry about.

4. Normal

You may also get squeeks from the handbrake, noise from the power steering, other noises from the gearbox, notchy gear change. All of this is normal.

Hope you can now get on with enjoying it. :driving:

Except that on mine it did get worse and ended with all sorts of thumping and rattling from the transmission. Too much play in the input shaft was the diagnosis and it needed a replacement gearbox. The noise the OP describes is normal as long as it's slight and inobtrusive but if it starts getting noisier don't ignore it.

These were all the questions I wanted to ask when I first got mine, to be honest the input shaft noise worried me, thought it might be an engine or gearbox mounting broken! Mine`s not overly tappety, more so on a trailing throttle when you`re not listening to the barking coming from intake and exhaust! Your Z4MR is an awesome one, I saw it on the BMW AUC website. I went M Coupe in Imola red in the end, same leather.

had a weekend in it now and loving it :D

very different from the Alpina in alot of ways.

I'm finding that the clutch rattle only happens when warm and when the car is turning i.e when turning into my drive. In the morning when cold it doesn't do it ? and it doesn't do it when travelling straight - very strange :?

I find also when warm, the exhaust is quite boomy around 2k - is this normal ?

Overall experience is

thanks - all normal then :D

I was worried about the clutch noise as I never had it in the Alpina at all

cheers

ok - can't resist - one last question :D

I have noticed that the normal headlight beam doesn't seem to be a patch on the Alpina's ? they seem to have the same bixenon units but with the ///M there is much less throw and much more of a definate cutoff of beam - if that makes sense ?

I'm guessing here but would this be that the Alpina used 4300k and the ///M uses higher ?

had a real good blast in it yesterday as the weather was so good with the roof down and I'm really starting to like the sound / handling / power compared to the Alpina - both cars are very different to each other, but the ///M seems much more sure footed.

When I got my car the headlights were c##p. I asked dealer to have a look at them and they adjusted them up. They seem fine now, this may be what you need.

The 4300k is simply a measure of the colour of the light output.

4300-5000k is usually accepted as the same as daylight, although some people prefer the 3000k 'yellow', 6000-10000k 'blue' and 12000k 'purple'.

The higher the 'k' the less light output you're getting as some of the spectrum is not being output.

Hello there, sorry to raise this question about the input shaft again but I just want to check what is "normal". I live in London so sadly my MR spends too long in first and second gear...anyway I've notice that there is a distinct rattle coming from what I assume is the input shaft.

It is there generally (as far I am able to notice) until I shift into third and start actually moving above 30. The rattle is kind of bothering me but I will live with it for now on the basis of the advice here. Should it get louder at higher revs or just stay a constant background "chatter" until the car starts shifting out of the low gears? Any more experiences of this and advice would be most welcome.

Thanks guys

Any feedback on this? Just getting to grips with all my M noises... its a different car altogether than the 3.0i!

lol - If it helps, theres always little rattles and squeeks in my M, especially at low speeds - i think that's the nature of a highly tuned NA engine, it's designed for higher revs and faster speeds. That's why F1 cars are a pig to park in Asda.

I am getting there... I think I just drove slightly different reversing last night and dumped the clutch a few times and thought I heard a new noise. Turns out the noise was there all along and from what I've read on here perfectly normal 8)
