New Z4M owner, few questions for you guys

Hi guys,

My short story

short intro first. I always been a sport car's guy since I was a kid. I had 2 mustangs, Probe GT, G35, WRX and my last one was tuned stage 2+ 450hp Audi S4, which was a monster. I really liked that S4, but it had the paddle shifting ... and I never really felt really in love with it. I had to conclude that I am a manual transmission guy. It is now clear in my head.

But I switched to a truck 3 years ago for practical reason ... a nice 4Runner TRD Pro. I love the truck to death but you will understand that, while being a sport car's enthusiast, driving a truck around for too long really start to grind your gears.

So I decided to start shopping for a summer toy. I initially had in mind a Porsche Boxter S or Mustang 6th gen convertible. I know both are different, but I kinda like both. Different cars in all aspects. I test drove few Boxter S, but for some reason something was always missing and never took the jump.

Then ... out of the blue ... a friend of mine asked me if I ever drove a Z4M. That guy knows me for that:

- I HATE electronic gadget. The less the better for me.
- I need a manual transmission, I cannot get used to the paddle shift.
- I love car that you need to tame, not car that will drive for you.
- I am not in luxury that much. But I do appreciate reliability.

Here goes the Z4M

Long story short, I recently stumbled on one of those Z4M up here (the only one for sale in canada right now). So I said "what the heck" and went for a test drive.

My first reaction was ... where the hell was I when those car came to the market. That car is a piece of art!!!! Any gearhead should drive one at least once in their life. The Z4M had everything that I was looking for and that I could not find in the Boxter S. The car is raw and will not drive for you. It drives WITH you ... not FOR you. It is savage, powerful and will skid when pushed ... but you will never feel that you will lose control. I felt in love with it within 10 minutes.

Few minutes of paperwork later, I now own a white 2007 Z4M with 60 000 miles on it. It is in mint condition ...could not find a scratch on it. This will be a summer toy and I will not use it during winter. The picture in the snow was shortly before the test drive ....but I will take delivery only in April.

So now ...

here are the questions for you guys.

Questions

First I want an exhaust. I want just a deeper tone, not too loud, and nice sound at WOT. But mostly, I do not want any drone!!! After reading around I think that the Supersprint could float my boat. I want the back boxes only. Now I am really debating if I should go the first one or the second one here. I was not able to know if the second one would be considered too loud .... but many people says that the first one is too close to the stock one.

What do you guys say? Any input would be appreciated. I am not looking for power gain for now, just better sound.

Also hear good about Hayward & Scott ... but again ... few complaints that they are too close to stock.

I would also like an intake. I am a sucker for sound and LOVE to hear the roar on an intake. I quickly concluded that many airboxes for the Z4M are ridiculously overpriced. 1000$ for a K&N filter and plastic sheet is nothing left than robbery. And yeah I saw those in 3000$-5000$ one too.

I heard mixed review about the AFE one. Again, I only want to open up the intake to hear that wonderful S54. What is your take on that one?

That little gem will become a project car. But for now, I am only looking for an exhaust and intake. After driving for few months, I will know what I want from it.

Thanks for the input guys, this forum is a bless :)

Welcome to the forum, sorry cant help with any of your enquiries, get some pics up of your past and present they will be well received.

From my own experience with ZMs
1) avoid Supersprints if you don't want any drone
2) GruppeM kit for induction amplification without spending silly money

welcome to the forum

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I suppose an M is a good place to start Z4 ownership!

I've only had mine a couple of months and can't help with your question about induction kits, but my car has Power Flow back boxes fitted and so far they seem OK. I'll know better when I have done a long run in it.

Welcome to the forum from New Zealand. Lovely looking car, great colour.
Seems the Gruppe M is the way to go then see how you feel about exhaust. Great believer in doing one thing at a time to see the effect. Cheers
