Hi All,

Had my z4Mc for 24 hours now and really pleased with her - epic drive really nice sounding engine!

I noticed a clunking sound when dropping the clutch....more so at low speeds....almost like there is a water bottle in boot.....any ideas? thanks.

Standard M-diff clunk. Nothing to be worried about. Mine has done this for as long as I can remember now, and still going strong, and every other Z4M or M3 i've been in makes the same noise when loading/unloading the drivetrain.

Enjoy! :D

I read somewhere that although it's normal you can eradicate the clunking sound somewhat by lubricating the Diff flange. Details n the this thread, which also links to more information in a bimmerforums thread.

http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20865

The below quote is taken from the bimmerforum thread and is the supposed answer.

"Check for rear noise. Coming from Rear diff.
Check for bulletin or PUMA case.
Found PUMA Measure #4670944
Remove Exhaust system and Propeller shaft
Remove Diff Flange and Lubricate with Greas
Reinstall Everything and Recheck. All OK"

Not sure if I can answer the question Sae, but as a general discussion point is'nt the CDV located near the clutch assembly?

It is, but its used when dipping the clutch.

Howver its only effect is when letting the clutch out, so wont be a cause of this particular issue.

It took me a while to get used to the extra noises, don't have much of a diff clunk, but I do get a slight diff whine on the overrun. Also normal apparently, and was given clean bill of health last trip to the dealership

I get this, more noticeable in the wet for some reason or other.

Quick update chaps - mines back at the dealers today to look at the clunk issue...
The technician said it was quite obvious and we need to look at it. reasonable chap. I shall let you guys know how I get on!

I am told the diff needs to come out and drive shaft seals need replacing... :?
thank god for warranty!

The service manager a good chap - honest and up front. he said most people wouldn't have noticed!

I didn't notice anything amiss on mine, but the dealer where it was in for an inspection called and said they'd need it for a couple of more days to replace the noisy diff.

Mine was also under warranty, so I didn't complain
