Hi everyone, just thought Id pop in and say hello. Ive finaly got a Z4 after wanting one for the last few years.
I got the 04 2.2 model and Im loving it so far. :)

Ive got a few qucik questions if anyone can help me out.

Should I be able to close the windows and roof from the remote? I can open them but they dont seem to want to close.

Cheers.

Pete.

Hi,

welcome to the forum and Z4 ownership, I hope you enjoy it.

I haven't got that function on my 04, but someone I was talking to has and as far as I know it works both ways. I think she said you have to lock it, release button and then hold again for a few secs before it closed the roof though.

Cheers Nick, Ill give that a try tomorrow. It does seem odd that you wouldntbe able to do it.
If you dont have the function on yours is it not just something the dealer can programme?

Ive came from owning Audis for the 5 years and trying to find my way round a new manufacturer so Im sure Ill have a few more questions popping up. :)

Cheers

Don't worry about asking questions, it's the best way to find things out :D

No, when mine was built, 03 probably, the module or whatever it is wasn't included. Where it is though, you're right, it's just programmable. I did ask an indy near me (Kent) earlier this week about fitting one but they just looked a bit baffled. Stealers don't do it any more apparently, health and safety  It's on the list though, along with iPod connection.

Funnily enough, just changed my 1 Series for an Audi

What Audi did you get Nick? I was originaly looking for a 120D to replace my A3 and ended up with the Z, I had wanted on for a good few year though. :)

Not using the key as standard, although you can put the key in the lock and close them that way. There is an aftermarket solution but so far the only people that seem to be able to do it are based in Hull, if that's any use to you. BMW can't/won't do it for you.

Well, lucky you, not getting a 120D imho. I had one for a year and on paper, yes, it fulfilled all my criteria, I was quite sure it'd be exactly what I wanted as a sporty, fun, 'sensible' car. But I thought the engine was rough - I'd had a 330d and wasn't expecting it to be as good, but not that bad. Bits of trim fell off regularly, each taking several visits to repair. Last time I put it it in for this I asked them to look at the paint flaking off (12 months old). They gave me an estaimate for repair! Ride was awful, bouncy, even after ditching rft's and back seats were useless anyway. Indicators didn't correct, auto lights were on constantly, air con was rubbish. Nuff said? You can get quite a lot of 3 Series for the same money and that's what I shold have done, or as you have, got a Z4 :) Had mine 4 years and a hassle-free pleasure to own.

As a sensible car I did consider the A3 but am not keen on fwd when you get a reasonable amount of power to put down. So I bought, er, a TT Coupe 3.2 Quattro :? Not sure how sensible it is but I'm enjoying it, it was the same price as the 120, albeit a few months older, and it is a hatchback  and 4wd, how sensible is that?

The Z4 is better though imho and was one of the best things I've done. I still walk back to across a car park and thin 'wow'. It's more fluid and engaging than the TT, more personality. Even better when you ditch the run-flats. And, of course, it has its name sculpted into the bodywork. 8)

Cheers for the welcome ldas.

Thanks again for the help Mike, I might look into geting that done.

Nick, sounds like I made the right decision then. Id heard a few bad things about them but I really like the look of them and the figures on paper looked good.

So whats the deal with the run flats then? Ive heard there a terrible ride, but what do people do when they get a puncture and dont have a spare?

Hi,

I've just changed the run flats on mine after 4 years and the difference wasn't as noticeable as when I did so on the 120. I suspect it depends on wheel size, which rft you've got, and the your use i.e. a lot of motorway and the 'issues' aren't so much of a problem. As far as I understand it, the sidewall stiffness which makes then run-flat compromises their grip over bumps and in the wet. I've read that if you do get a rft puncture it's often not repairable and replacements can sometimes be difficult to source - though less so as they become more common I'd have thought.

I'd be inclined to see how you get on and decide later. There'll be a few threads on which tyres people have swapped for etc. Falken seems popular, though I've gone for Goodyear F1's again (Continentals on the 120 were good). I just carry a can of Tyre Weld or whatever it's called.

Exactly what I thought about the 120, on paper, excellent. Forgot to add, on motorway the sharp turn in which was good in lanes etc made it feel unstable compared to my old E46 imho.

Hello,

Ive changed manufacturer of runflats - from bridgestone to michelin - and the ride and handling are leagues better :D

Cheers for the info lads, the dealer fitted a brand new set of Bridgestones so I'll see how I get on with them. They dont seem too bad at the moment but I guess I'll prpbablly not feel the difference untill I swap.

Welcome to the forum, I'm sure you weill enjoy the car, and well done on your choice of model

As has already been said, you can open the roof with the remote control by keeping your finger on the button, but good luck, because if mune is anything to go by, it does have a mind of its own and quite often will stop half way through the motion, which makes you look a bit stupid if there are people about

I was told by the dealer that the function to close the roof isn't there for health and safety reasons. However you do have the option of turning the key in the lock to close the roof and shut the windows. This never fails half way through :D

I too have changed my tyres to the non-run flat type and have seen a massive improvement, the whole car feels better. I also swapped from 16inch to 18inch wheels so I think that also had a bearing.
