I personally think they have ruined the look of the X5!!

I think they've drastically improved it!

[EDIT]
To qualify that statement, I think they've given it similar looks to the 3 and 4 Series, which are (IMO) the best looking cars BMW make now.

I can hardly think of a single BMW that is going in the right direction for me style wise. 1 series no headlights, 2 series shortarse, 3 series boring, 4 series = 3 series-2 doors, 5 series is ok but a bit bland, 6 series looks good for the most part but the headlights remind me of a Ford scorpio, 7 series well its just a boat.

Don't get me wrong, they're all lovely cars, but the styling is well just not great IMHO. But then to the next man they might be the best design ever I guess.

For me, and I hate to say it, Mercedes are going from strength to strength on the style/design of most of their cars. G Wagon excepted

For me, Mercs are still far too 'chintzy'. As far as the German cars go, BMW still have the edge. Audis are the worst, because other than the physical size, they all look the same -.-

BMW critique because I'm avoiding work!!

1 Series is a bit of a pig. My mate has one, and I just can't get on with the looks. Lovely inside though.
2 is okay, but still suffers from 'fat face' syndrome just like the 1.
3 and 4 I personally think are beautiful things. Pulled up next to a black 3 Tourer with Xenons the other day and may have dribbled a bit.
5 is a brute, but bland.
6 is lovely inside and out, IMO.
7 just looks horrible. Merc still have the edge with their S-Class I think, though even that's a bit of a gopper.

All X Series are horrendous, but the new X5 face is the best of the lot. The X1 is a particular assault on my senses, and they insist on selling them all in 'dog turd brown', which makes me think BMW are having a colossal joke at buyers' expense.

Z4 is nice but not a patch on the original one.

i3 looks ugly, but is a game changing car so I can forgive it.
i8 is SHMEXY.

The recent face of design with the new BMW,s is not only way off the bullseye it,s not even hitting the board for me .
I know when the E60,s & prev 6 series came out the world sniggered but it wasn,t long before everyone wanted them & as time as gone by they still look great on the road .
Not sure it,s going to repeat this time around ?
They may be well presented inside & great to drive but kerb appeal & aesthetic,s are still a major factor in car purchase & for me they have zero wantability factor when held up against the rival,s ,
Style & looks the Ben,s were pulling ahead but tweaking their C,E & M classes they too look in danger of "over egging the custard " so to speak .

I agree with this. It's a big improvement.

I admit I wasn't keen on the new X5 when I first saw it in photos & it hasn't grown on me either but until I see one in the metal it's hard for me to judge it properly.

I should also probably qualify my comment. There is virtually no SUV/4x4, or whatever you choose to call them, that I like. I think they are almost universally horrible, ugly, square barges. The only exception is the Evoque so far, which is a clever design. This X5 is one of the least offensive of the horrible-square-barge-brigade, but it's not as nice as the original X5 was.

The new Merc A class looks a huge step forward. If I was looking at a 1 series I would have to check out the A class first..
Think I would have an Evoque instead of the X5 it just looks a bit bland for me...

+1

I think it looks better than the last one - but not sure if the interior has been improved which for me has always been the biggest let down in this car in comparison to the competition.
