New X1

Bought a copy of BMW Car Mag yesterday which had a pic of the new X1 on the cover due out later in the year and thought it looks actually quite smart, especially in Alpine white with 19s on. I've never been a great fan of the X Series models as they've generally to me looked awkward and pretty ugly. The replacement however looks far more cohesive albeight a little Honda CRV on side profile. Understand its based on the 2 Series Active Tourer floor pan so will be front wheel drive or in XDrive all wheel drive form if going for that model.

It looks like you can already spec one up on the BMW website.

I could be quite tempted as would really like something with all year round ability without faffing with winter tyres etc.

What do peeps think?

Tim.

I think it looks a massive improvement on the previous one, which I think was basically a re-clothed 3-series touring underneath. Would have to be x-drive though in my opinion. I don't see much point in the FWD version.

Just because you get a 4wd car it doesn't negate the need for winter tyres, if you've got no grip it doesn't matter if you're 2 or 4 wheel drive. I've seen rear-wheel drive cars on winter rubber cope with hills that had 4x4s sliding back and sideways into the kerb

When we got our X3 one of the first things I did was buy a set of extra wheels shod with winter rubber

I would agree but it really depends where you live in all honesty, if its the Scottish Highlands or parts of Wales then would go for full winters. I've spent a fair bit on an extra set of wheels with winters in the past and completely wasted my money as the following 2 winters were fairly mild, yes they're an insurance against the possibility of bad weather. Living in the Midlands I've found all season tyres more than upto the job on the Z3 in 4/5 inches of snow, in fact I was amazed at just how good they were. If I did go for an X1 then I would be tempted to fit all seasons for year round use rather than an extra set of wheels with full winters which are ££££s from BMW.

Personally, I think all-season tyres are awful but your money, your choice.

You don't have to pay BMW prices for winter wheels, I picked up a set of BMW F25 X3 winters with decent winter runflats from an ex-lease car at about a third of the new cost of the bare alloys. Also, as the winters go on around the start of Nov and stay on until around the end of March, the wear on the tyres is shared so the rubber doesn't really cost any extra

I wouldn't fit all seasons on the M135i but on something like an X1 I reckon are more than upto the job. I tend not to push the Z3 like a plank as its only the 1.9 but generally found them fine.

I like them but just spec'd one with a few nice toys and it came in at £38k.

I thought this was the budget 4x4 of the brand

The one I specced was the 2.0 petrol XDrive and came out at 35K in Alpine White, 19s, Comfort package and sunroof, Nav is standard now across all models :) same price as 3 Series Touring XDrive :? or the LCI M135i with more toys hmmmm.

I've already had one of the local dealers trying to get me to buy one. I think it looks alright, not really the kinda 4x4 I'm after so I won't be venturing into the dealership to buy. Plus he got my name wrong in his email, phone call and video thingy he sent me. Only been a customer for 13 years.

I thought the first gen X1 wasn't a huge seller until they started doing 'deals' around the 20k mark. Maybe this one might be a better money maker for them. For the price I'd rather spend the extra and get a X3 or buy an Evoque and possibly have change.

I went to see the Ssangyong Tivoli today and for £17k you can have the top spec 1.6l Petrol Auto small SUV which has been built from the ground up by Mahindra and Mahindra. Its a lot of car for the money and other than the fact its no speedster Ive seen very few people be able to fault it.

If I were in the market for a small SUV that would be where I would go as for the price and x-factor alone I dont think it can be beaten..

X3 is a bit too large for me and the Evoque I'm unsure how reliable they are :?

I'm guessing the X1s 2.0 petrol is a retuned N20 as used in the E89 in which case it would have to be a diesel if going for one.

X1 vast improvement on the last one (although as you say a bit CRV).

What's with your racy avatar Tim! I am shocked!! :D

I really like the look of the of the new one and I actually quite liked the old one to drive but I just wasn't convinced by the way it looked, I think this new one could do very well.
