New water leakage

Hi All

I recent only got my Z4 (2005 plate) two weeks ago and initially it had a problem with the driver side window not meeting the seals at the top. Therefore, when I was driving you could hear the wind and water dripped in. Took the car to the indie dealer and his garage fixed the window by adjusting the regulator or something. Anyway, that bit is fine no wind noise and no leaks when driving.

Left the car alone for a few days due to work and when I came to get into it today the driverside footwell is soaked. Not sure if this is due to yesterdays turbulant weather or something more sinister.

The car is always parked on an incline, nose facing downwards as I live on a hill and I push the mirrors in/upwards when parked to stop them getting knocked off.

As I am new to the car I don't know what tell tale leak signs I need to look for. There did seem to be a kind of water trace mark coming from over the seal near to the door sill.

Also, I fear the carpet will be wet underneath now as I faint wet dog smell is noticable.

Please if anyone can help that would be great.

It's almost certainly the membrane in the door that has been damaged by a previous repair. People just rip the membrane off. Water then runs down the windows and into the car, instead of out the base of the door and outside

Take the door card off and fit a new membrane or patch it up thoroughly
 
Thanks for your replies guys. Would you suggest I get this done by BMW themselves, as I don't know of any BMW or Z4 specialists in the Manchester area.
 
I would echo the above opinions. Door membrane highly likely and if so, an easy fix or replacement. I repaired mine myself and it was very straight forward.

In the past day or two I have noticed that I seem to have more water making it's way in to the car (passenger side) I expect this is being caused by the roof drains, which I intend to address tomorrow.

So, if I were you I'd get the door card off and check the membrane, repair it if not badly damaged or replace if very tatty. Easily done and not too dear either. Then, take it from there. Hopefully your roof drains are fine.
 
HI Phil-E30 many thanks for that. Where are the roof drains, and someone mentioned drains under the bonnett
 
Run a search as there are lots of write ups on roof drains and detailed photos

The main culprit is the rear one's that are for the roof, but there are also drains near the front bulkhead for the fresh air intakes

Get the membranes checked first.
 
Thanks for that cj10jeeper. How many drains does the Z4 have, are the main ones under the bonnett and at the rear. I noticed in my vehicle it appeared there was a trace of where the water had somehome run over the seals that are on the inside of the door sills and then the water has run down onto the carpet. It's only the driver side that affected not the passenger side and only the foorwell not behind the seat.

I had leak issues with a Smart Roadster that I had and that spent most of it's life in the MB Dealership trying to get it fixed and I can't believe I am having the same problems again this time with my new Z4. :cry:

One roof drain at each rear corner in front of the rear wheels.

2 under the bonnet (or maybe 3) can't remember. One is right down at the bottom of the engine bay on the lhs, other is high up on the RHS near the bulkhead. Easy to spot and open.

They really are easy to sort.

Since you say the rear is not wet then don't waste time on drains yet and get the door cards off. What you describe is simply water running down to outside of the door glass, though a damage or unstuck membrane and then out the bottom of the door card and into the car, instead of staying outside the membrane and dripping outside.
 
I am going to check the drains tomorrow and I have a friend who works at BMW and they are going to get me a price to replace the door membranes. I am useless with car DIY so would rather pay and get the job done right than attempt it myself and cause more problems. :?

I assume clearing and checking the drains needs to be a regular thing to do?
 
I will attached a photo (when I figure out how to!) of where I believe the water is coming into the cabin. Not sure if this is purely because of the freak weather we had the other night as the car is parked on a hill nose down and the wing mirrors where push inwards/upwards. So, maybe with the strength of the rain and the position of the wing mirrors somehow increased the water flow somehow.
I did check the drains under the bonnett as providing I am looking at te right thing it's no blocked.
Anyway, I'm still going to get the membrane looked at and I am sure the carpet will need taking out and drying, especially the sponge underneath.
What a nightmare, I only had the car just over wo weeks, gutted! :cry:
