New tyres = unstable car

I've just switched the rears on my Z4 coupe as they where getting a little low, about 3mm left, and it was getting sideways all the time in the wet.

I ditched the RFT's soon after I got the car and fitted conti sports all round. I've replaced the rears with some bridgestone RE050's as I'm not a fan of the conti's.

Problem is now that the car deosn;t feel very stable, alsmost as if the rear is sterring the car. I've check the pressures are correct, the nuts are tight. Any other suggests?

Could it be the the car's just tramling more now?

Thanks,

J.

You made the mistake of not changing the fronts my friend - Contis in the front & Bridgestones in the bck

I would have gotten 2 new contis for the back and then when those were running out I would change all 4. Need to keep the same brand and type of tire on all four corners.

You try running with one running shoe and one dress shoe :headbang:

I've mixed makes of tyres in the past on new cars and not had the same issues. although I guess they where front wheel drive cars and the fronts and not the rears where replaced...

It can create a dangerous situation too when in unstable driving conditions... I'm surprised a Tire shop would not have suggested a big  to running two makes?

I've not changed from asymmetrical to directional tyres, all I have done is changed from one make of asymmetrical tyres to another!

Both tyres are the same speed rating, both summer tyres etc!

I think these cars are quite sensitive to the footwear they have on them. That said, I put Goodyears on all 4 feet and they were slippery as **** for the first 250 miles or so... they will bed in, but think about matching up the 4 corners if at all possible.

With respect that isn't the issue, the handling characteristics of different tyres makes can vary wildly and mixing brands between front and back is a recipe for disaster. I do accept that some front wheel drive cars are far less susceptible to handling issues when the tyres are mixed but any BMW that I've driven with mixed tyres has been totally unstable especially when you're pushing on a bit.
