New Tyre time but...

Not driven the M40i much over the last 18 months but have been doing a longer trip the last few days. I've noticed the rear tyres were getting a bit less grip than usual. On checking them, they are getting ready for replacement soonish. (13.5k Miles)

However I have a couple of issues.
Firstly the tread wear is far from even. Both rears are significantly more worn on the outer edges than in the inside edges. Anyone know if this is normal wear for the G29? I'm careful with my pressures but the inside edges still have plenty of meat while the outsides are almost on their wear indicators. I don't spin wheels at all but do like to drive it hard at times. (who doesn't?)

Secondly, what are people fitting as replacements? It appears I can't get the Michelin Pilot Super Sports that are currently on it (OEM fitted) as they've been superseded by Pilot Sport 4S. Problem for me is the fronts are absolutely fine and that would be mixing tyres which I don't like doing (Have previous experience of it ruining the car handling) Not keen spending the money to swap the fronts at 18 months old when they're in good nick.

Any ideas?
 
Get tracking checked.

I just had 2 Michelin super sports fitted on Tuesday, had no problems finding them and got a deal on them too.

If both rears are worn the same then I’d suggest it’s down to cornering. Personally I think you’ll just have to cough up on this occasion and swap all 4 for the new Michelin’s and then just swap rears next time. You can’t have a fairly powerful rear wheel drive car, drive it hard then not expect to spend on boots sire. :thumbsup:

ATS Euromaster, I was £401 fitted for the pair of rears.
 
Could be as suggested driving style. But have you had the alignment checked? Possible camber issue? Not expert just trying to assist.
 
OEM Tyres are available. Don’t think they have been superseded.

The outside edge wear is pretty common on past zeds. Hence why people usually add a couple of psi to the tyre pressure.
Don’t know about the g29, but it’s a common thread with BMW’s.
 
Cool, thanks guys for the advice. I'll have a further look for the tyres but any that I found didn't appear to be BMW spec ones unless I wanted to pay nearly £300 each. Hopefully I can find some cheaper than that.

I guess it might be cornering that does it as that's where I noticed the lack of grip not straight line acceleration.

It's going to BMW for the oil service soon so might ask them about it. Although they won't see many Z4 so might have no idea anyway.
 
I swapped my rears a couple of months ago from OEM Michelin PSS to Michelin PS4s. I was advised these had superseded the PSS and struggled to find PSS tyres at the time. 11500 miles on the OEM tyres and tread was between 4.5mm and 5mm across the tyre. No major issues regarding uneven wear.

Paid £360 via Blackcircles deal at the time for the PS4s tyres and no issues whatsoever keeping the OEM PSS tyres on the front. The PS4s tyres perform extremely well in all conditions but take longer to warm, not as sticky but provide excellent grip. I’ve found no significant change in the handling characteristics of the car in the dry and it feels slightly more grippy in the wet. The PS4s tyres are likely to last slightly longer than the PSS tyres as well.

Plenty of reviews online from people who have gone over to the PS4s tyres and most seem very impressed with the newer Michelin’s.
 
Thanks everyone. Managed to get 2 x rear PSS for £410 being fitted Wednesday by Kwik Fit Mobile. They had the cheapest deal I could find this week.
 
I've around 4-5mm left on my tyres after around 12200 miles so will look to change them all before winter kicks in. The car is 2 years old.

The default choice appears to be Michelin PS4 or PS4S but has anyone gone for a non-Michelin option? I've not been overly enthralled with the handling on anything but smooth roads so wondered if a change of tyre make may make a difference. I also noticed that the Michelin's lost their effectiveness at around 8-9000 miles.
