New to me - Imola Red M Roadster

Hello all, just purchased this beautiy - a 2006 Imola Red M Roadster, and I couldn't be happier with it!

This is my first BMW - previous toys include a C7 Corvette Stingray, a Nissan 350Z, and Solstice GXP - and this is by far my favorite so far!

Thank you all for the warm welcome, and I look forward to any tips / advice that you all have for me! A few questions I had as well…

1) Far as I can tell, mine has a few mods including SuperSprint exhaust, M3 CSL wheels, Halo-style DRLs, and an old-school (I think?) rear BMW emblem. What other mods / personalizations would you all suggest?

2) I know an intake is a common mod on these cars and sounds great ... will I be able to hear it / enjoy it over the SuperSprint? Or will the SuperSprint overshadow the intake noise?

3) My car has 62k miles on the clock. I understand there's some preventative maintenance folks do on these engines (i.e. VANOS overhaul, valve adjustment, etc.). Is there a way to tell if my car has already had these done? If not, when would you suggest that I do them?

4) I'm told that a clutch delay valve delete is a critical mod - is there a way to tell if that's been done already on my car?

5) Is there a maintenance schedule that's generally agreed upon in these parts? I understand that a lot of folks think BMW's maintenance schedule was a bit ... optimistic lets say. So, I'm curious how often folks do engine oil, diff fluid, transmission fluid, etc.

Lastly ... for those interested (possibly no one haha, this is long to feel free to skip), a little about how I landed on an M Roadster. Many of my friends / family were surprised that I "downgraded" from a C7 Corvette to a much older, slower car with less features and tech. I simply tell them ... you have to drive one!! I had about two months in between contracts at work, where work was incredibly slow. After doing everything else I could think of, I thought ... why don't I line up some test drives, just for fun, just to expereince some other cars? During this time, I drove 997 911, 991 911, 987 Boxster, 981 Boxster, Aston V8 Vantage, S2000, ND Miata, E46 M3, F80 M4, Camaro6, F-Type V6 S, Lotus Evora, gen 2 Dodge Viper, C6 427 Corvette, R57 Mini Cooper JCW, and of course my own C7 Corvette Stingray. These cars are all special and amazing in their own way, but only one got in my head, stayed with me, and really made me question whether I was in the right car ... and that of couse was the M Roadster. After every other test drive, even the likes of 911s and V8 Vantage, I would think "yeah, that car did some amazing things ... but give me back the keys to my Vette". But not the M Roadster, I just couldn't get it out of my head. It's tossable size, short gearing, small stearing wheel, screaming S54, pefect amount of power to enjoy on public roads, very quick steering, and that BMW frantic / high-strung feeling all combined for a driving experience that just won me over. After a few nights trying to talk myself out of it, the M Roadster was mine, and the Vette had to go. I couldn't believe it - had you asked me two weeks ago, I would have said "I love my C7 and it's not going anywhere". Yet, here we are.

Personally, I think the M Roadster is the most fun and engaging car on this list. It may not be the fastest or the most precise, but I do think it's the most fun and most engaging. I gave up a lot with the Vette - 130hp, literally double the torque, a bunch of tech / features, rev match (a gimmick I know, but I liked it - approaching a red light and dropping down to second and hearing that v8 rev) … but none of that matters once I’m behind the wheel in the M Roadster. Many disagree, understandably so, but not me :)

As an aside - it amazed me how many cars on this list were ruined by gearing that was way too tall. C6 427, Viper, 981 Boxster, and others had epic engines - but you can never rev them out past 1st gear without losing your license. Short gearing and a high revving engine is a seriously under appreciated combo.

Welcome to the forum. Now you have the car, you need somewhere equally inspirational to park it. See the monthly photo competition for ideas.

Thank you all! Anyone have any thoughts on my questions above (at least 2 and 3)? Sorry to have so many questions out of the gate, just trying to figure out what I need to get done based on what I’ve heard about these cars. Thank you all!

First off I must say your M looks superb in Imola Red.

That would have been my first choice, but mine came up at a price I couldn't resist.

1) I think I already commented on the exhaust on another thread. Genuine 19" CSL wheels fetch serious money (like £2.5K a set) but there are loads of replicas around. Genuine ones have a raised "BMW" stamp on them inside the raised bit for the M badge, and CSL fronts are 8.5J. CS had 8J fronts. Aero sills are very desirable here but cost over £1K a pair, but I bought some anyway!

2) I don't know. I have after-market back-boxes on my car that sound great so I've resisted the temptation of an Eventuri/Gruppe M intake in case it drowns out the sound of the exhaust.

3) & 5) I'm still learning but it seems they need an oil service, Inspection 1, oil service, Inspection 2 and repeat in that order. Inspection 1 includes checking valve clearances on a cold engine with adjustment using shims, Inspection 2 adds fresh fluid in the gearbox and differential to that. So if your Service Book shows an Inspection 1 or 2 it should have had those jobs done. Loads of owners change the oil every year but BMW work on a time/mileage basis of 2 years/16K miles. I don't use my car that much so after an Inspection 2 it had an oil service 2 years but only 6K miles later. Then 2 years and 8K miles later an Inspection 1.
Another issue is crank rod bearing shells which seem to suffer wear especially if the engine is hammered from cold. My car had 7 previous keepers so I figured at least one might have been less than sympathetic and had my bearing shells replaced at 78K miles for peace of mind. As 6 were showing copper I was glad I had and while the cross-member was off I had new engine mounts fitted which made quite a difference as the originals were shagged!

4) Just google BMW CDV. It improved my Z4M, albeit not as much as some of my other BMWs.

It was great to read of your previous cars (photos would be appreciated BTW) and other possible options, but what you said about high gearing surprised me seeing as my Z4M is getting into 3 figure speeds at the rev-limit in 3rd gear!

Welcome to the club! Personally, I enjoyed the short story of how you landed on the Z.

I'll throw my .02 out there for mods:
- Some people like to paint the V braces behind the grilles to make them pop. Calipers too.
- GapTech or another version that allows for operating the roof via the key fob
- A quality dash cam is always a good idea for a car like this. I love having clips saved from scenic road trips and whatnot
- BavSound speaker upgrade is worthwhile if music is your thing

Thank you for all the info!

Considering the age and mileage (2006, 63k) of the car - when would you suggest addressing VANOS, valves, rod bearings, etc? And does anyone know a good shop near DC metro area that can help?

Also - should I relocate the convertible motor to the trunk? Sadly no garage so it’ll be parked outside. Motor was replaced in 2022

And yeah, gearing on z4m is a dream compared to most modern cars. 2nd gear tops out in the mid 70s in most (including my c7 vette), but the worst offenders are 981 Boxster and c6 z06 where 2nd gear goes to 80+ and the Viper where it goes to 90!! What’s the point of an amazing v10 or a 7 liter v8 if you can only rev it out in first gear on public roads? Drove me crazy. Z4M is a dream by comparison.

My car has now done 92K miles and as far as I know has never had any work done on the Vanos - certainly not since I bought it on 76K.

Rod bearing shells are really tricky. I've known people go past 100K before getting them replaced, but seen worn shells come out of a car before 60K. It probably depends mostly on how the car has been treated but buying used you just don't know. I got mine done for peace of mind and because the car was always going to be a keeper so they were always going to need doing at some point.

Here's a photo my old shells at 78K.

As far as valve clearances go my car went about 50K miles without them being checked so I had them done just after I got it. 5 shims were required, but after another 4 years and just 14K miles it needed 11 shims! If you have a service book they should have been done the last time it had an Inspection 1 or Inspection 2. If not and they need adjustment you might hear them on a cold start.

I don't know much about roof motors as I've only had Coupes, but here's a link to a video someone found:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=129475

It sounds like Vipers are geared like motorcycles!
