hi guys,
first of all many thanks to all the posters who helped with the car search, it was all great stuff & helped me hopefully find a great new car :)

as posted on the M forum i've gone & landed a lovely Z4M coupe, only 25k miles & drives lovely :thumbsup:

so, for the time being i won't be using the car as a daily driver but we've been going over the car & there's a couple of things i need to get sorted, the first two may be related.....

first of all there's a god awful creak/rattle at the rear of the passenger seat. it's hard to pin down but it "may" be coming from the bit of plastic trim below the rear quarter light window-very annoying! it's certainly not the seat rubbing against the back wall.

the second is a bit of a funny boot release. if i press the boot release switch on the key fob or in the cabin the boot unlocks & then locks in quick succession. if you press the key fob to unlock it with your hand under the boot edge you can open the boot by lifting it before it locks again. if you simply unlock the car & go to open the boot it won't open.

i'm wondering if someone's been in there having a look at the lock mechanism & has not put a piece of interior trim back correctly thus causing the creak. the black trim that holds the warning triangle has definetly been taken off as you can see the black paint has been removed from the screw heads (this obviously leads me to believe that they found out it wasn't a cheap fix & decided to leave it!).

has anyone come across these things before?
 
I had an issue with my passenger seat rubbing on the plastic, the seat was rubbing against the bulkhead. This was with the seat set to a high point on the adjustment and pushed fully back. Try setting the seat low by pulling it forward and while sitting in it and let it go to its lowest point, then re-adjusting the fore and aft position... Hope that the explanation is understandable

it's definatly coming from the passenger side high up-ie shoulder level though it can be difficult to trace these things, it's just funny how there's a fault on the boot release & some trim has been removed & now there's a creak :headbang:
 
Congratulations on your purchase, to say I was tempted by this car is an understantement, great spec and the best colour combination by far! You've got yourself a cracker :thumbsup:

Cheers mate, I was a bit undecided to be honest, the csl was sapphire black & was a nightmare to keep looking clean & I've got to be honest, the interior was a bit "Michael Jackson" but it's growing on me :)
 
The creak may be coming from the storage bins behind the seat. Mine were creaking so I removed them and put them back and solved the problem, they come out if you pri them with a very small flat head screwdriver, its snap fit so just go round the edge. sorted mine :thumbsup:

Its a really good looking car tho! Great colour! The tinted windows really set it off, think the tints make a huge difference got them on mine too, the key may need programming again... but Lloyds made a right mess of mine and ended up replacing the whole programming unit and starting from scratch.

It also has the two tone red / black leather interior and piano black dash if I recall correctly..
 
actually tom i just took a quick look as i needed to pop home to pick something up-it appears i don't have storage bins behind the seats, just a lot of speakers!

i'm almost certain it's not a programming issue, i think it's more a micro-switch failure? the boot unlocks & locks immediatly as soon as either key fob or interior button is pressed. it's booked into autotec (just behind lloyds) next tuesday but i'd hope to get it sorted myself before then.

honestly mate i'd love to lol, i actually quite like the full red but mine aren't heated unfortunatly. to be honest though it's not as bad as i make out & i think i'll live with it, it's just that every time i look at it i think of wacko in the thriller video for some reason :cry:

Tom - were your tints factory or aftermarket?
 
ok i've been doing a bit of digging in between clients this afternoon & the most obvious fault for the boot lock faust would appear to the boot lock actuator. no biggie as they're under £20 on the 'bay but before i order has anyone any experience of this? it's all down to second hand info off the net though & most of that seems to be about e46 models (though it's the same part).

it would appear that seeing as the lock is "unlocking", this releases the solenoid but if it isn't strong enough (ie the actuator is failing) the boot isn't getting the chance to open.

this would make sense as it will open if i pry my fingers under it to lift it when the solenoid "pops".

or another idea i've thought of is if the bootlid struts are too weak to jump the bootlid up when the solenoid works again thus locking itself.

any thoughts?

do we have any tamed BMW mechanics on here that i can ask?
 
Regarding the creak. I've posted on here with a similar issue...think I called it a leather squeak!

Mrs JonZ4G literally put her finger on it, although we've yet to resolve (too cold and wet).

While driving, just above left shoulder in the passenger seat ask someone to press the side of the seat, hopefully, if the same as our 3.0i, you'll find the cause, if not the solution!

Update :)

Dead simple fix as it turned out....

Like I thought about the gas struts it was actually the rubber supports that the bootlid sits on that was at fault.

They needed adjusted up a bit as they weren't springing the boot lock past the solenoid so it was locking itself again.

5 min job, that creak from the roof however........
