New owner & member in need of advice!

Good morning all!

Firstly I just wanted to say hi.

I am a new owner of a 2003 2.5 with only 59k and 2 owners. It was a friend of a friend that put me on to it as one of the front springs had broken and they couldn’t move it out of the garage and knew I liked the Z4 and I decided I wanted a project…

New springs and shocks fitted and the car is now sat as it should be I moved on to the dreaded roof issue. Several swear words and hours later the motor was removed and in a terrible state. New motor purchased from eBay (not genuine) and fitted but roof still not moving. I then got concerned that when fitting the motor to the reservoir that I hadn’t done it correctly so purchased a further motor with new reservoir so I knew it was sealed correctly and should be a simple process. How wrong I was!

The roof latches and unlatches as it should, the motor sounds like it is working but doesn’t move the roof. The motor times out and has the red light on the switch. Have I missed something obvious or could there be something else to look for?

I have read that several people have fitted these ‘cheap’ motors with success but wonder if I should have purchased a genuine used part?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Fantastic forum which I will hopefully be able to load some photos up when the car is finally done!

Thank you all in advance.

Welcome to the forum, I don’t have an E85 but I believe there is a bypass valve on the pump that may have been depressed, which wouldn’t allow the pump to build any pressure.

Thank you Chippie.

There is a release catch which is connected to the motor/pump. That would make perfect sense! Maybe it is as simple and now obvious that could be the issue.

Thanks again, I will update as soon as I have a chance to get to the workshop and look at it.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I've only had Coupes so never had any roof motor problems, but there are a few people on here who have managed to revive seemingly dead ones, relocate them into the boot and can offer some advice. Hopefully one will be along soon!

Good morning Mr Tidy,

Thank you for the reply. It does seem that I am in more of a pickle than most as various videos online have shown it to be a relatively simple fix albeit a pain in the neck. Will update as soon as possible with hopefully good news!

Chippie - you hit the nail on the head! That was exactly the issue I was encountering.

Now have a fully working roof and motor relocated.

Thank-you to everyone that took the time to help me.

A couple more jobs, full service and go for the MOT!
