New owner, couple of questions

Hi all, been visiting the site for a few months and learned a whole lot from you guys (thanks), I bought my first Z4 just about a month ago, its a 2004 2.2i, silver, had 18" elipsoids (prob spelt wrong), covered 40k miles and i paid 8k for it, its in great condition inside and out. Ive changed the wheels to some replica 19" CSL's which im very happy with, and ive bought a chrome stubby (cost £2 took 10 seconds to screw in, base is still black but it look better than original).
I have a few queseions for you guys, firstly the car seems very slow, i know its not a 3.0 M but it is defo slower than my old audi diesel that i traded it in for, which im not overly happy about, are the 2.2s known for being very tame ?
Secondly im thinking about getting a hardtop, what sort of price should i be paying for a used one, and will i get most of the money back if i come to sell it on again a year later ?
Thanks in adavce....

Welcome aboard. I have a 30.000 mile 2.2 feed it on top shelf petrol,no probs only runflats which on the QT in a way like.
Car has no mods just good petrol can not fault performance very rapid indeed and the road holding second to none.
Does respond with foot down driveing and top shelf. Do you ever have enough power????
Just finished a day at silverstone driven a 360 and that did not seem enough power after a few laps.
mybe some one has a better answer?? :driving:

Hi and welcome to the forum, regarding the slow 2.2 my previous zed was a 2.2 and had no probs with performance,a turbo diesel will feel quicker compared to a normally aspirated petrol engine.
I sold a H/top at the beginning of the year on ebay and it went for just over £900 but i have seen them go for less hope that gives you a bit of a guideline.

My Hardtop was Bright Red but the guy who bought it his zed was white,so had to get it sprayed which is about £200.

Enjoy the Zed

thanks for the quick reply, perhaps there is somthing wrong with mine, honestly when i totally floor it, on a slight incline in the road, it feels like i could walk faster, i had a 2004 audi a3 2.0 tdi before, and it was definatley quicker than my Zed !

strange- i came from a golf gt tdi and the 2.2 is defo faster- its no rocket ship unless you gear it right which you may not be hitting as you are used to the torque of the tdi? Try droppin a cog when you want to be spirited. I have no probs on any forum trips with runnig withthe pack.

you will need to use a higher rev band to get the most out of a 2.2 i believe,

there isnt much that would cause it to be down on power that you wouldnt be able to hear with your ear.

I generally try to change gear around the 2k revs mark as im a tight fisted b@starD and hate shelling out for fuel, perhaps i just need to go through the gears slower to see any power, seem to be getting an average of 28ish mpg around town, does that seem about right ?

The 2.2 is not a bad car you do indeed need to go through the gears, the power kicks in around 3000rpm, they are very flat in the lower rev band. I must say when i first got my one i was a little disapointed with the performance but i was comeing out a 230bhp Mini cooper S, which had loads of bottom end power and being super charged it meant straight all the way through the rev band.
I have now had my 2.2 remapped and that has made a great improvement, love driving it now it is so responsive , if you do not go for a remape you will need to start going up past 2000rpm to get the best out of it. i done a round trip last weekend of 200 miles and the car returned 36mpg that was a mix of heavy traffic on the motorway and some A roads.

This is a vid from a run from last year i'm the car in front at the begging i think the car with the camara in was a 3lt

TDi's like a Leon FR 170 I had serve up monstrous amounts of torque but they don't have the rev range and will always feel front heavy and not as sporting as the Zed. A - B in the real world the top TDi's will stay with most Zed's barring the mighty //M, however that’s obviously not the full story or we would all run Evo/WRX etc.

I noticed hardtop prices have softened in the last 18 months, probably in line with the Zed market and also possibly due to the average age of Zed's rising, hence fewer being used as every day, year round transport. One sold on ebay this week for £820 and that was described as new/unused with cover etc. Another is available in the south for £200 requiring a paint and new rear screen, which I think must add another £300. Average condition lids have sold for about £600 - £700 depending on colour and time of year.

Happy Zedding and enjoy the total experience, the 2.2 has six-appeal

If you are coming from a Diesel you'll not find the same torque in low revs. As others have said you should enjoy the higher rev range for more power. :driving:

Might be worth checking the plugs are OK.... although the OBC should report any engine issues if you have any.

p.s. What did you do with the old ellipsoid wheels?

The 0-60 times on the 2.0tdi a3 and the 2.2i z4 are near identical.

The tdi will have more torque in the lower rev range and will feel faster especially if your short shifting.

still hve the old wheels in the garage, 18's obviously with good condition run flats on, was planning on keeping them as im sure the car will be easier to sell with the OEM wheels, but for the right price id get rid

Also just yesterday i noticed the car felt very light at front end when i went over about 60mph, i dont remember this happening before i changed the wheels, perhaps they need balancing, any ideas ?

Welcome to the zed club!

I can't imagine you'd get much performance from any engine shifting at 2k revs! And I'm no expert, but 28mpg with that driving style doesn't sound great. I never give any consideration to when I change up, just depends on my mood and the moment, but I'm getting a near identical mpg from a 3.0si.

i hate saying this as ive only just bought the car, but really wish id got a 3.0, am i right in saying they have a 6 speed maual box, whenever im on a dual carriageway it seems like in 5th geat after about 55mph the engine is really reving highly, and 1 more gear would solve the problem......

I think you're still driving it like a turbo diesel. In comparison, your Z will have little grunt at 2k rpm but loads at 4 - 6 k when your old Tdi has gone up 2 more gears. To get the power, you need to rev the thing and when a Tdi will sit a 2k rpm on the motorway at a decent speed, your Z will be between 3 and 4k rpm and of course will sound busier. I drive a 2.2Tdi Toyota Rav 4 for my daily drive, and my Z at weekends, I have to adjust and drive them differently. As an axample, a TDi you can simply operate, a normally aspirared 6 cyl sports engine you have to "drive", the more effort you put in, the better it gets. There's nowt wrong with your car, just learn it and you'll love it. :D :driving: :D

thanks for the replies people, guess ill just have to rant it abit more than im used to, which is no bad thing as its a great handling car and fun to drive, guess ive just got used to fuel lasting forever in my TDI, which it isnt going to do in the zed
