Sounds fairly decent despite the turbos.

Unfortunately it reduces the differentiation between the marques. The BMW ///M range was always different to the rest of it's peers, but now if you want a lardy automatic (probably won't offer a manual in the UK) V8 super-saloon then you can add BMW to the list along with Audi RS, Merc AMG, Jag R, etc.

Am I the only one who thinks the M-car switch to turbo's is less about emissions and more about profit margins ? How many E60 M5's did BMW sell ? What proportion of total E60 sales were they ? How much did they raise the CO2 average for that model. Not much I'd guess.

But it must be a heck of a lot cheaper to rehash a twin turbo used elsewhere in the range and put a trick exhaust on than develop a new engine from scratch.

I think that Series 1 M may be the car to look out for for a drivers car! Still a turbo engine mind.

Isn't it all about how much power I have over the similar Audi or Mercedes model, the most cost effective way is to slap some turbo's on and fleece the punter for as much money as you can.

Sorry bit depressed with BMW as a company at the moment,

So it seems for now that the Z4M is the last "pure" M car. Given it was naturally aspirated plus manual only... I bought a future classic

????????? The M5 and M6 continued after the Z4M with their na V8 and V10 engines.

He means N/A and manual only - we never got the manual option for the M5.

I must admit I do prefer some kind of automated shifting, manual gearboxes drive me mad!!

After using a DCT I would not like to go back to a manual gearbox.

We had the manual option for the M5. I agree with Kryton, though, a DCT *might* just coax me out of a "true" manual. That thing in an M3 is super sweet.

I will only go for auto box, e.g. DCT, if it's faster than manual. Both normal auto on 23i and 30i is slower than manual :( . DCT on 35i and 35is is faster than manual :) .

You could be right there! Even though the V8 M3 is an awesome car the last straight six model is the true M3 in my eyes. But, things move on and the 335is is quicker than that straight six now.

Think there is a bit more to it than just slapping turbos on! :P I think they are doing great at the moment. It must be so hard to get a performance car at that price range to give any performance these days because of the ridiculous tree hugging pressures on manufacturers. Well know fact that a turbo engine gives out less C02 than a normally aspirated engine putting out the same power! My E89 Z4's twin turbo engine is a different league to my old 3.0si engine but it still sits in the same road tax bracket than my old Z4 and it gives better MPG also so it's not all bad!

As a side note I would like to have seen how my old Z4 Coupe would have gone with the E89,s twin turbo engine in!!

Price of having an S. Do you mainly do short journeys? Apart from the occasional drive to work (8 miles) most of my journeys are at least 50 miles long on out of town roads.

If I use mine for work every day for a week (mainly stop start town traffic) mine plummets! Just been on a road trip down to Lands End (covered about 1,230 miles) and averaged 32MPG! a few spirited drives there also! Main average is around 29MPG. Use it for work I hit around 25MPG. My old 3.0si used to average around 27MPG. Best I got out of that on a trip was around 30MPG. Not much in it but there is comparing performance! I'm not exactly a slow driver either.

The more tuned the engine the worse the MPG will be if you just pootle around towns in it! You need to use that more! Doing it no good at all using it for those short journeys!! I rarely use mine for work but still rack up an average of around 120 miles a week at the moment!
