'tis the way forward, Audi did it too with the S4 (now a V6TT not a V8 like the old one). Emissions regulations, efficiency, etc.

Based on that photoshop I will still want it BAD. That looks like sex.

Now if only we could scrub out evidence of the E60's entire existence from the 5 Series time line....

Can't see it happening as it would be quicker than the M5 never mind the M3!
 
It also makes it easier/cheaper for BMW to do a range of 'M' cars with the same engine but different characteristics - all with a simple bit of reprogramming.

For example, a high-power, lower-torque version for the Z4/1M/M3 and a mid-power/high-torque version for the soft-roaders and luxo-barges X5M/X6M/7 series.
