Well it has taken me a lot longer than anticipated but finally my new dock is fitted!
The problem I had was that my existing dock didn't charge the phone as it is quite old and the older iPods can use a 12v charge, new ones only use 5v charge. So every time I plugged in the phone it would come up with an error message to say the device will not charge!!
Anyway found an adapter that is for an iPod docking station and it looked about the right size for the ashtray so bought it! Now it's not a perfect fit but it ain't too bad. I think it cost 17.99 on amazon.
The existing dock I had was pretty ugly and was in the glovebox, so I was forever forgetting my phone or not even bothering to put it on it!

Anyway it is now complete, the only thing I would've done different and may still change is the connector between the two docks, as the plug was too deep for the space underneath the ashtray!
Here are a few pics!

This is the wires for the original dock. I had enough space for the dock to stay behind the removable panel above the ashtray!

It was also starting to get damaged in the glovebox.

That's it done! But I can't show the phone on it as I'm using it for the pics and the camera probably has no charge! When the wife is about I will use hers! But it fits really well, you can just tuck it under the dash slightly and it holds it all in position. I will glue or plastic weld it once I have made my mind up about the connecting lead!
This dock also would fit perfectly and I mean perfectly in the little cubby behind the handbrake.

Oh and it works too, charges and everything!!!
