New discs - drilled, grooved or what?

Looks like I need new discs and pads on the front, not interested in 'Bling factor' just efficiency and wear.

I'm confused by the different types, am I right in saying that plain discs are the best, if so with what pads? I don't track the car, it's a daily driver but I drive it like it was meant to be driven!

I'm aware that grooves and holes dissipate heat and gases etc, but surely they will also accelerate pad wear and reduce braking efficiency due to reduced contact area? Is there a compromise solution, e.g. just grooved or just drilled?

Looking to be educated please!

I went with drilled as I wanted an OEM+ look, but then I went with the Heat Treated and Counter sunk drilled Tarox discs.
If you're going with cheep ones like MTec or EBC then avoid the drilled ones as they have tendencies to crack.

Drilled!!

Your more likely to warp grooved disks than drilled ones cracking.

What evidence are you basing that comment on? :poke:

I warped and cracked a set of Mfec Drilled discs on my Jetta 2.0TFSI within 6 weeks. I'll try and find the pics. They were the worst discs I've ever run. Replaced them for second hand pagid discs, skimmed them up, never had a problem again.

Have you considered that Mfec (or Mtec) disk in all formats are actually Shite.

I'm fully aware of that, he seems why my Z4 has £700 worth of Tarox drilled discs on it, not £140 worth of Mfec sh**e :D

Also, a lot of people will be wondering why the standard M-Discs don't crack. The answer is that they aren't actually drilled. The holes are cast into them, so they aren't as likely to get stress fractures from rapid heat cycles.

think you're generalising a bit there...i've dimpled and grooved and they're fine

Many people find them perfectly OK, but they are made from the cheapest quality blanks you can find... Like those £9 quid a pop budget ones from EuroCarParts.
- Machine them - Slap a little bit of paint on them - ship em out! Job done.
As long as those who have them are happy with them and aren't having problems, It's perfectly fine.
But for those of us who do use either an aggressive pad, or use the car on track occaisionally, or drive like total dickbags... they are worse than a standard disc.

So......ordinary Euro Car Parts/Carparts4less ATE discs and pads it is then, ta.

ATE for the 'M' cars yeah.

Otherwises any reputable brand. Brembo / Pagid etc.

This thread is confusing me. I've been researching brake discs and pads and mtec have had good recommendations on here and other forums. First time I've heard a bad review, not doubting your experience but was it a one-off with your Jetta?

Who's the oem for non-m cars (3.0si)?

BMW use a few suppliers for the Non-M discs.

ATE will be fine if you can get them. Either that, Bosch or Pagid.

Thanks, couldn't find ATE for the rear but will try one of the others.

ECP have them listed. Use my reg if they don't come up for yours. All 3.0si's are the Same, whether Coupé or Roadster.

I am also about to change the 4 discs. I wanted originally to "upgrade" the OEM discs by getting drilled ones, mostly for the look, however I could not be happy with the drilled discs that fits the Z4.
Due to what it seems to be a low production size of discs, you're not finding so much suitable aftermarket rear discs (the fronts are shared with BMW E46).
As I am also a bit relunctant to go for MTEC discs, I've eventually decided to buy OEM+ plain Zimmermann discs:
they seem to be of an equivalent quality than the OEM (ATE?) discs, and the big part for me is that they are coated. Which means I should not see this nasty looking rust on the hubs anymore

Front P/N: 150.1294.20
Rear P/N: 150.3436.20

These fits 3.0si. You can also get the front drilled ones from the E46: 150.1294.52
