New companion for my Z

Guys,

You're the only petrolheads I got to tell of my new pride'n'joy, so you will have to bear with me. :)

After spending several months taking my Z to places where it really shouldn't be going to carry my duties as an amateur landscape photographer (and when I say my Z shouldn't be going is because these places are clearly not designed for cars) and pushing it as hard as it could go on the mud/water I decided that it was time to treat it with respect and find something else to take me and my gear to my favourite landscapes.

After some research and excluding the Range Rover Discovery because it was too expensive, any Audi/BMW/Merc 4x4s because they are too soft-core and I want proper off-roading capabilities, the Japanese because they have no soul and look like everything else on the road I kind of decided to choose something from Jeep.

I had a Grand Cherokee Overland for the Easter Holidays and tried that off the road. Liked it. It would go through muddy trails at 30mph with me laughing hysterically behind the wheel and splashing dirty water so high that I got mud in the sunroof. I loved it. But when I went to a Jeep dealership I saw the Jeep Commander. :sweetheart:

This car is very little known over here in the UK and is not being imported by Jeep any more, so the only chance I had of getting one of these beauties was to find a good demonstrator/second-hand. Because only very few of these cars have been imported to the UK I didn't have many options to look at and discounting the pimped-up ones that the dealers modified to 20" alloys, sports exhausts, spoilers and all that cr%p that they do with the cars I found one in Tombridge in dark grey, entertainment pack (the only optional in the options list) that includes satnav, 6 CD/MP3 player, rear-seats DVD player, rear-view camera and sunroof for both the first and second rows of seats and the car was being sold at a huge discount over the list price when new (I wonder why ).

So I bought my perfect Jeep and now my Z has a big, brutish companion that will take its place on the less forgiving roads and when hauling larger loads. To my Z a more relaxed life of track days and fast B-road driving awaits, and that's where it really excels.

I will take delivery of my big bad boy next Saturday and if anybody cares to see it I can post some pictures. Next month I'm off to Lake District for some proper off-road training, trying not to make a fool of myself on some more advanced situations... :)

Jeeps - one of the other loves of my life for many of the reasons you state. Sounds a good vehicle to have

So where you based?

I was chairman of the Jeep Adventure Club (j33p.org) for 5 years and still run a coupel and have a pretty good idea how to move one of these things around if you need any help

WLH, isn't your second car a Jeep too?

Way kewl description of your adventures! Thanks for sharing... very much enjoyed the read! :D

It was as I have had Wranglers for years but my adult daughter has a Jeep Compass which she will let me use if I ask real nice so I sold my Wrangler last year.... :(

I'm counting the days and I'm almost as excited as I was when waiting for the Z. I plan to book some off-road tuition on the Lake District for next month as I don't want to do like the guy in the video posted here recently that submerged his truck... :)

I'm based in C. London (yeah, I know, not really sensible) and I appreciate any help I can get as my experience with off-roaders is... limited at best. :P I used to love Jeeps when I was back home in Brazil, but never had one and when I came to Europe it kind of faded a bit as I started buying sportier cars. Also being in Britain I started to admire Land Rovers as they are quite ubiquitous. It was when I had the Grand Cherokee over easter that it reignited my love for these cars and when I saw the Commander in the metal I just couldn't resist. And that cabin... Oh...

I spoke to my dealer today and the car is taxed and now they are tinting the windows. As it doesn't have a boot liner I thought it would be best to get a very dark tint around the car so that I can leave stuff in the boot without people seeing it. Saturday 9 AM I will be there with my CD case and a big smile in my face.

If it is for the general happiness of the forums I will make the effort and post some pictures of it this weekend.*

* actually I was hoping you guys would ask so that I can show you my new pride & joy... :)

Cool. Friend of mine took delivery of one about 6 months ago - loves it.

Over there you don't get the 3.0 V6 diesel, do you? The dealership that I'm buying the car from had a 5.7 Hemi as well, but I fancied getting the diesel for the torque (I can get 428 ft-lb after a remap, but it is already 376 lb-ft at 1600 RPM standard) and the fuel economy. Ken Livingstone would be personally knocking on my door asking for my wallet if I bought another gas-guzzling car... :)

Picket up the car yesterday and it is every bit as good as I expected. First impressions? Love it to bits.

Here go some pictures:

I love the bolts in the wheel arches and the dashboard. Just help give it a more brutish look.

Nice, that's a big car. How does the performance compare to the ///M, is it adequate at least?

Got any pics of the sunroof please

It is big and I noticed it today a lot: I drove it to work in the City (I was sorting out my parking permit and couldn't leave it in the pay and display bays) and negotiating the underground car parks there take some care. I have to say though that there is a guilty pleasure on driving such a monster in town in traffic...

Performance is more than adequate. It has little power (215 bhp) and masses of torque (376 lb-ft). Off the line it is quick, gets to 30mph in no time and doesn't struggle to get to motorway speeds. It is when the torque starts giving up to power that it is much slower than the Z, I'm trying to get used to drive it on the torque. Of course much of that is removed from me by the automatic gearbox that is well mated to the engine. I'm considering a Startech remap as well that takes the power up to 265 bhp and torque up to 428 lb-ft, but it is on the expensive side offered by Chrysler-Jeep dealers for over £1400.

More than anything, this is not a car to go fast: its body rolls, you can't go fast around corners, suspension is soft and so on. It is a comfortable cruiser that has loads of space and will take you through almost any terrain. For going fast I definitely prefer to get the Z out.

I will post a picture of the sunroofs on the weekend. :)
