New center brake light

Hi,

I just installed a new third brake light, since the old one was completely finished.
I can read that you can cut a bit of the old springs, and approximately two coils can do it.

What is YOUR experience? I do not want it getting too tight and break again - but it must not sit loose.
And can't get the new 40nm.
 
Mine was fine so the original springs were probably OK. That being said I ordered the weaker springs and washers for peace of mind. They are not the same springs as listed - you have to find the SIB and run through about 4 iterations or part numbers until you find the current one.
 
I used the old ones but only did it hand tight and so far no problems. No water getting in and not cracking

It is also my plan.
I've just turned them halfway into the thread (near full in at the old light). So they just get the lamp to fit tightly. I think no immediate loosening of bolts, as there is still pressure on the springs.

But it still bends/press the light a bit, when tightend, to get the corners in. :cry:
 
Yes mine did bend slightly. However I only just tightened them hand tight so hoping will reduce risk of cracking/breaking
