New Boxster/Cayman GTS plus GT4 now

OG - did you drive the Cayman S? I did a few weeks back and coming straight from the 991S it was rather a shock, certainly in the environment where you are sitting in. The pedals were also way too close together, I could not change gear properly because of that as my rather large feet got caught by the brake each time.

I would have thought in the world of porsche the 5k is reasonable considering the exterior changes - really like it in red . Has the look of the previous gen Spyder without the disadvantage of the roof .

Im not going to argue with you Steve, but because a journalist has said so doesn't mean its true. Neither is it for everyone.

We've test driven so many cars recently because spending 60k on a car is a big deal. Including the new Cayman, and not only were its looks a turn off for the money, we weren't overly impressed with it either. It appeals to a different audience to that of my dad which is why the 911 is the car he wants.

If that makes me a snob then so be it.

No pvr to be fair I haven't, although I have driven the 981 Boxster S, albeit in PDK, so wouldn't have noticed the pedal issue that you found difficult.

I do think with the Cayman S for some people, not anyone specific, it doesn't matter how fantastic it is, it will still not be good enough simply because it isn't the 911. If that's the case I wish people would just admit that's why rather than try and justify reasons in the cars performance or ability that simply are not there. The people who's opinion I really value these days like Chris Harris, who is a massive Porsche aficionado,
Dickie Meaden (EVO and ex-racing driver) or Steve Sutcliffe (Autocar) all say the same thing - that the Cayman S is the finest car Porsche make and is probably the best resolved sports car in the world. Now even taking that into account, I wouldn't buy one because I want a GT3 because that presses my buttons in terms of what I want from my weekend toy. There is no shame in admitting a Cayman is brilliant but them saying you want a 911. After all that is the iconic Porsche with the 50-year history. Why do you think though that Porsche have never made a GT3 Cayman? It's because they know it's already a brilliant car and they don't want to take sales from a £100k car and put them into what would probably be a £65-70k car.

I also don't get the looks comment - it's so closely related to a 991. Look at the front of both and the side profile of both - they are so obviously related to one another and now the interior is virtually identical too!

So what precisely does a 991 Carrera (not an S) give you over a Cayman S other than two small rear seats? I'd love to know and find out what I'm missing?

Isn't it similar to a comparison between say a Z4 Coupe and a Z4M Coupe? Some things just guides you to the M for no particular valid reason, but it still does.

This is a horses for courses thing here I think.

If I cared about kudos and generally just wafted about with the occasional hoon then i'm going to buy a 991. If I want fun and don't care much about being flash then a 981S is a much better fit. From driving both back to back (PDKs) the 981s was a better sports car. The 991 is more like a big GT car now, more so than the 997.2. It was a grown up car but the 991 is a very grown up car (i'm not talking size or weight or anything, just the whole feel of it).

Yeah, but anyway. I guess Porsche have brought out the GTS so early because they know it will sell more units. Bring out the GTS, bring out the facelift, bring out the R.... keep the sales coming.

Some opposing views  well I'm keeping my head down and not voicing my opinion :)

Ooshhh!!!

But I'd prob sooner buy an Aston or a 360 for less money if I was ever rich enough

It would be an S that we would buy not a standard Carrera. But what I meant is the new 991 Carrera is a better car than the 997 CS, quicker, smaller engine, more MPG lower tax. Which is my thoughts on how impressive it is that the base model will outdo the previous top end model! Very impressed. Thats all I was saying.

Looks similar from the front and side, which gives it a Porsche feel but from the rear, looks like a squished frog, that spoiler looks so out of place and ruins the lines of the car IMO Like where has that line come from? It doesn't meet anywhere!! Just looks like its been slapped there. Then the bland lower section that just looks bloated and doesn't suit the car. Especially when you look at it from the side and you see how much to protrudes.

Now thats a rear. the 911 is just classic, gorgeous car and in the flesh looks even better. The Cayman looks like a younger brother, looks like it has been held back because of the 911.

Plus there is nothing like the 911 to drive, yes it might not be as good as the Cayman because its mid engined. But the GT3 is the same recipe as a 911 but just a harder core version... The Carrera S is 85% the car the GT3 is on the road, if not better because the GT3s ride is so hard and unforgiving on UK roads and the Carrera just glides over the bumps. The 911 is just a brilliant recipe in its own right, a flawed design that just works and that is also something thats appealing because it is so good, you can just hang the arse out. So brilliant to drive, because it feels different.

If you want a car that is as anal as the Cayman and will make you feel like an incredible driver because of the way you can aim it at any apex and just hit it perfectly every time then ye fine. Its so anal that is has no personality, I have only driven the 1st gen Cayman against the Z4M and the Z although not as refined a driving experience the M is just much more fun, its a brute, loud and like a wolf in sheeps clothing, sedate until you press the loud pedal and drift around a roundabout without any effort at all. The 911 to me is very similar, and thats what it has over the Cayman. My dad test drove the new one and as it has 2 seats I couldn't go with him, but he said very similar, brilliant car it just doesn't have the X factor. I have grown up loving the 911 because my dad does and of corse that is why and I always will.

Contrary to beliefe just because a car is nearly perfect on paper doesn't make it perfect. It doesn't have the personality and it does feel like its trying to kill you which is a huge turn off. Sounds stupid but I want to control it not it control me.

If they actually made the cayman a more serious contender, add another 100hp to it put it in real super car territory in the line up instead of worrying about 911 competition then it would be a brilliant car, but they won't. But you can tell they have held it back. Could be amazing its just not yet, and thats half the problem. It doesn't have the kudos, I love driving behind the 911 they look so right. Its hard to explain.

Also from an age perspective a 55 YO man driving a cayman... it just doesn't suit that age, it was designed for the younger market. It has a more youthful look and the 911 looks classic. But as a 25yo I would buy a 911 if I had the money no questions asked.

When Chris Harris reviewed the 991 for EVO he said it was a brilliant car and feels a step on from the previous GT3RS... 'Thats a big compliment to pay a standard 911'...

The naysayers will still criticise it Graham!

Yes indeed, I'd possibly say the GT4 will be a better car than any 400bhp 991, and especially for track days :driving:
