New Battery

Well after letting my Z4 sit for a he better part of the last 8 weeks, the battery was stone dead. I was able to get the car started with a jump, but after reading the experiences of others on the forum, I had no confidence in the battery holding charge. For peace of mind, I splurged $80 on a new Bosch battery. What do you guys think, waste of money?

I had a Bosch silver in my previous car

To be fair IMHO 3yrs and then I would not be concerned if I had to replace the battery.
I would get a trickle charger if your not going to use the car for a bit though.

The battery is only just over a year old, I would not have replaced it yet. I have a CTEK battery maintainer on mine to prevent the battery going flat, as in my previous Z I killed the battery in 3 years by letting it go flat time after time ...

I have found that car batteries seldom hold to their warranty period. I believe my car sat many months in LA, CA. before I had it shipped north to Seattle. I've had it for about 15 months and in the last couple of winter months, noticed a sluggishness in starting up with our temps, at worst, 40F.

I suspect the CTEK you mention is a solar unit ?? Not useful in my garage but regardless, plan on hitting up BMW for a battery check and, hopefully a replacement. With the old batteries, you could usually add some water and give enough life to get a start when dead.

Currently, I'd be apt not to spend extra money on a premium battery but stay alert to the cranking power and have it checked prior to being stranded and have it swapped out for a new one paying the difference in warranty.

If I wasn't using the car for extended periods of time, I'd disconnect the battery. You may be able to leave one of the cables connected to keep memory settings intact but not drain the battery.

No - this is the CTEK:

If your battery stops functioning properly during the warranty period, you get a new one for free. You don't need to pay the dealer the difference.

And are you currently in the Seattle area? If you are, several of us here on the Eastside come out for meets every month or two and you're definitely welcome to join us. :)

I have had good luck with a Deltran Battery Tender. It is a smart tender and will keep your battery in good shape ready to go. It is as good as the ones BMW sells. At our local BMW dealer all the cars on the show room floor use them.

I have the BMW Advanced Battery Charger (82-11-0-026-663) in case I'm not driving my Zed for extended periods of time. You can get it for ~$55 @ Tischer

To charge and maintain your battery at proper storage voltage, just plug this 1.25 amp charger into a standard 115- VAC wall outlet and insert the adapter into your BMW’s electronic socket. Unlike traditional trickle chargers, this item uses an on-board microchip to monitor and regulate the charge- virtually eliminating sulfation. It can even help extend the life of your battery.

If you change the battery, will the radio lock up? (I never got a radio code :( )

Dont think that is a problem, had my battery disconnected before, never asked for code
